Don't trust the person. Trust the pattern. I don't care how long you've been married to them. I don't care how much they say they love you and they're gonna figure it out and they're gonna do better. If there is repeated pattern of harm, that's the thing that you need to focus on. It doesn't matter how lovingly they speak to you after they've caused harm, it doesn't matter if they have a 12 point list of all the things they're going to do differently. If this is the 3rd, 4th, or 5th time that you're having the conversation about all the things that they're going to do differently, that's a pattern problem. And by trusting the person more than the pattern, you're going to continue to have a problem. I'm not saying that people can't change because it happens every day. The loving words, the cards, the flowers, all the stuff that can repair a relationship temporarily, but if they're not making a choice and figure out themselves and choose to figure out their relationship in a meaningful way that doesn't just last a few weeks, you have some decisions to make, I can't make them for you, but I can bring them to your awareness and say the pattern is the thing that you need to focus on.
