Itโs one of the most iconic, most recognizable and most reproduced logos of all time. And it revitalized a city. In 1977, New York City was in decline. Its public perception was as a crime (and rat) infested dump. The New York State Department of Commerce sought to revitalize tourism through an advertising campaign. They needed a powerful graphic, something that would inspire positivity in inhabitants and attract tourists to its friendly streets.
The commission went to acclaimed graphic designer Milton Glaser. The story goes that Glaser, inspired by a conversation in a taxi cab, sketched his initial idea for the "I Love NY" logo with a red crayon on a ripped envelope (now stored at the MoMA). The design aligned with Glaserโs design philosophy, which prioritized simplicity above all else.
When it made its way onto a white T-shirt, it was an instant hit. The shirt sold by the thousands. It immediately became a must-buy for tourists to purchase on their trip to the big apple. If you went to New York and didnโt buy one, did you even go? The campaign was initially intended to last for a few short weeks. Instead, the icon bedecks the shirts, hats, and coffee mugs of souvenir shops across the five boroughs more than four decades later. Glaser gave the logo rights to New York for free. Yet the state has also filed more than 3,000 Trademark complaints for unlicensed use of the logo. Still, itโs hard to follow up with every cease and desist in the bootleg T-shirt capital of the world.
Upon its debut, the campaign exceeded all expectations, quickly capturing the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. The campaign was only supposed to last a few weeks, but was extended for years. The "I Love NY" logo became an instant sensation, adorning billboards, buses, and brochures across the city. However, it was the "I Love NY" T-shirt that truly propelled the campaign to unprecedented heights.
Tourists and locals alike embraced the T-shirt with fervor, proudly displaying their affection for the city they adored. It quickly transformed into a powerful symbol of unity, warmth, and resilience, particularly in the face of New York City's challenges. The T-shirt's universal appeal transcended language barriers, resonating with individuals worldwide and igniting a sense of connection to the vibrant metropolis.
The "I Love NY" T-shirt endures as an iconic symbol of love, pride, and unity for New York City. It serves as a remarkable testament to the creative genius of Milton Glaser, and has solidified itself into popular culture.
Exactly 17 years ago today Daft Punk played Coachella. An incredibly iconic set from the robots - would give anything to have been here.

โIf you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friendsโ actually refers to being socially accepted by your loved oneโs closest companions and does not insinuate initiating coitus with said companions in an attempt to solidify your status as lovers. @followthefishtv#sublabel
