In a recent interview, Dr Raghuram Rajan says we are getting only low paying manufacturing jobs in Tamil Nadu. He also opposes industrial policy at the national level. Let me explain the intrinsic contradiction between these two ideas.

Let us consider the iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu. It would take the average worker there about 5 months of work to afford the entry level iPhone. In China, it would take only 1 month of the same factory work. The work is the same.

High paying jobs, which I agree we need, come from high value addition and that requires that we not only perform the R&D but we also own the IP in India and capture the resulting economic value addition. Only then would pay in even products where India does not have much IP (like the iPhone) would go up.

If you look at major IP-rich, successful companies in the world, all of them do substantial R&D in India. But only a tiny fraction of the economic value added by these companies (measured by their gross profit, as distinct from the net profit) actually is accounted for in India. Gross profit captures employee compensation, net profit and taxes, and goes directly into GDP calculation.

I will present two admittedly crude examples, just to illustrate the issue.

Nvidia has a gross profit of well over $200 billion a year and 24% of Nvidia employees are in India, mostly in R&D. Microsoft has a gross profit of about $230 billion a year and 10% of its R&D staff are in India. India's economic accounts will not show anywhere near 24% of value added by Nvidia or 10% of value added by Microsoft. India would only show a small fraction of the $48 billion value added by Nvidia or $23 billion of value added by Microsoft (presumably) arising from Nvidia India and Microsoft India R&D operations. Again, crude example, for illustration purpose only etc.

If we create Indian companies that own the IP in India, much of their economic value will accrue in India.

This is why long term R&D and capability building is so important.

Now let me come to industrial policy. The only mechanism the world has known for a "developing country" (no IP, low value addition) to become a "devloped country" (lots of IP and value addition captured locally) is to spur the domestic entrepreneurs and industry to gain the know-how and capability. This is the lesson from East Asia, and a great book on that topic is "How Asia Works".

Dr Raghuram Rajan represents what is called the "Chicago School" economic theory, originally arising from Milton Friedman. The Chicago School does not agree with industrial policy.

Following the Chicago School will get us to Mexico's economic situation (lots of low wage manufacturing) but never to Japan or Taiwan or South Korea and now China. Getting to Japan or Taiwan or South Korea or China require us to understand "How Asia Works". China rose from very low wages and now has overtaken nations like Mexico, because China has the know-how and IP and Mexico does not.

In one interview, Dr Rajan has managed to both want high paying jobs (yes!) and oppose the very policy needed to get us there!

பேராசிரியர் காமகோடி மற்றும் அவரது தந்தை பேராசிரியர் வீழிநாதன் இருவருக்குமே நான் நன்கு அறிமுகமானவன்.

அதனால் அவனது பார்வைக்கு ஏதாவது ஆகிவிடுமோ என்று பயந்த அவனது தந்தை, புகழ்பெற்ற சமஸ்கிருத தர்க்கவியலாளர், அந்தச் சிறுவனின் கிரிக்கெட் மட்டையை ஆழமான கிணற்றுக்குள் எறிந்தார்.

"உன் கிரிக்கெட் வாழ்க்கை இத்துடன் முடிந்தது," என்று கூறிவிட்டு, ஒரு வயலினை அவன் கையில் கொடுத்தார்.

"துல்லியத்தை (Precision) கற்றுக்கொள்ள விரும்பினால், இதில்தான் தேர்ச்சி பெறு."

அந்தச் சிறுவன் கோபப்படவில்லை. தனது முழு கவனத்தையும் வயலின் இசையில் செலுத்தினான்.

கடுமையாகப் பயிற்சி பெற்று, பின்னர் இசை உலகின் ஜாம்பவான்களுடன் மேடையேறி வாசிக்கும் அளவிற்கு உயர்ந்தான்.

பாரத ரத்னா எம். எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி அவர்களிடமிருந்தே நேரடியாக ஆலோசனைகளையும் திருத்தங்களையும் பெற்றான்.

ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து, அவனுக்கு மீண்டும் ஒரு பெரிய ஏமாற்றம் ஏற்பட்டது. IIT-JEE தேர்வில் தேர்ச்சி பெற முடியவில்லை.

ஆனால் அவன் மனம் தளரவில்லை. ஒரு பிராந்திய பொறியியல் கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்தான்.

கணினி அறிவியலின் அடிப்படை தர்க்க அமைப்புகளை (Logic Gates) ஆழமாகக் கற்றான். பின்னர் முதுநிலை ஆராய்ச்சியாளராக IIT மதராசில் சேர்ந்தான்.

முனைவர் பட்டம் (PhD) பெற்றான். அதே கல்வி நிறுவனத்தில் பேராசிரியராக பணியாற்றி, இறுதியில் ஒருகாலத்தில் தன்னை நிராகரித்த அதே நிறுவனத்தின் இயக்குநராக உயர்ந்தான்.

2011-ஆம் ஆண்டில், உலகம் முழுவதும் நுகர்வோர் பயன்பாட்டு மொபைல் செயலிகளை உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரத்தில், இந்தப் பேராசிரியர் இந்தியாவின் ஒரு மறைந்திருந்த தேசியப் பாதுகாப்பு பலவீனத்தைப் பற்றி சிந்தித்தார்.

இந்தியாவின் ரேடார்கள், போர் விமானங்கள், வங்கிச் சேவையகங்கள் (Banking Servers), பாதுகாப்பு அமைப்புகள் அனைத்தும் வெளிநாடுகளில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட மைக்ரோபிராசஸர்களைச் சார்ந்திருந்தன.

அவரது மனதில் ஒரே ஒரு கேள்வி:
"ஒரு வெளிநாட்டு சிப்பை (Chip) நாம் செய்ய வேண்டியதைச் செய்கிறதா என்று சோதிக்க முடியும்.

ஆனால், போர்காலத்தில் அது நாம் விரும்பாத வேறு ஏதாவது செயலைச் செய்யாது என்று உறுதியாகச் சொல்ல முடியுமா?"

இதற்குத் தீர்வாக, முழுமையாக இந்தியாவில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட, தொழில்துறை தரமான (Industrial Grade) ஒரு மைக்ரோபிராசஸரை அடிப்படையிலிருந்து உருவாக்கும் திட்டத்தை முன்வைத்தார்.

உலகின் முன்னணி தொழில்நுட்ப நிறுவனங்கள், "பல பில்லியன் டாலர் முதலீடும், மிகப்பெரிய கட்டமைப்பும், ஏராளமான வெளிநாட்டு காப்புரிமைகளும் இல்லாமல் இது சாத்தியமில்லை" என்று கூறின.

ஆனால் அவர் அதைப் பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை.
சிறிய ஆய்வகங்களில், நீண்ட நேர உழைப்புடன், தனது குழுவுடன் இணைந்து Open Source RISC-V Instruction Set-ஐ பயன்படுத்தினார். ஒவ்வொரு Logic Gate-ஐயும் கைமுறையாக வடிவமைத்து, Silicon Layout-களை உருவாக்கி, கோடிக்கணக்கான Instruction Cycle-களைச் சோதித்து உறுதிப்படுத்தினர்.

2018-ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை மாதம், "Risecreek" என்ற குறியீட்டுப் பெயருடைய வெறும் 16 சதுர மில்லிமீட்டர் அளவுள்ள சிலிக்கான் சிப் ஆய்வகத்திற்குத் திரும்பி வந்தது.
அந்தச் சிப்பை இணைத்து மின்சாரத்தை இயக்கியபோது, திரையில் மெல்ல மின்னியபடி Linux Operating System, வரலாற்றில் முதல் முறையாக 100% இந்தியாவில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட சிலிக்கானில் வெற்றிகரமாக இயங்கத் தொடங்கியது.

இன்று, அவரது SHAKTI Processor Architecture, பாதுகாப்புத் தகவல் தொடர்பு அமைப்புகள் முதல், ISRO உடன் இணைந்து உருவாக்கப்பட்ட விண்வெளித் தரக் கட்டுப்பாட்டு அமைப்புகள் வரை பல்வேறு துறைகளில் பயன்பட்டு வருகிறது.

ஒரு காலத்தில், தந்தை கிரிக்கெட் மட்டையை கிணற்றுக்குள் எறிந்த அந்தச் சிறுவன்...

1985-இல் IIT-JEE தேர்வில் தோல்வியடைந்த அந்த மாணவன்...

Here’s the story of Ranjish. 💔

He was 38, a bus conductor. He married the girl he loved and had a daughter.

The DMK ecosystem is attacking me that the school issue I reported was a lie I concocted to help the TVK government. Let me state the facts.

We run two rural schools, both free NIOS schools under the Kalaivani Kalvi Maiyam umbrella, one in rural Tenkasi and the other in rural Theni.

The Theni school was originally started and run by a retired IPS officer, a honest and upright man. He built very nice facilities but had to shut down his CBSE school because the state government demanded too much money to issue the NOC. He told me that as a honest retired officer he did not have the money to pay and they would not issue the NOC otherwise.

He urged us to take over his trust so we could run our free NIOS school in the premises. That is how we started our NIOS school in Theni.

Unlike in Tenkasi, where I live, the Theni school faced occasional harassment from the DMK government because we did not have a state government registration, so we tried getting state government approval again (this time for the state board) and that of course would also cost money. So it was in a limbo.

Meanwhile in Tenkasi we wanted to build new school facilities (we were operating in make-shift facilities, the ones that came in frequent photos) and we applied for DTCP approval to construct the new buildings. Everyone who knows DTCP in our state knows what kind of corruption happened there under the DMK.

We waited patiently for DTCP approval for the new school buildings but the approval never came as long as the DMK was in power. The approval came automatically once the government changed.

It is this DTCP approval that I posted about in X. I want to once again appreciate the refreshing change.

Not only did the approvals come, government people told us not to pay money to anyone for any approvals. I have to appreciate this in public, having endured what we had endured before.

This is the "lie" that DMK wants to attack me on.

I do not need their certificate on my character.
They can examine their conscience and ask why a technology nerd like me who is mostly immersed in code would post these.

If they think I would back down by their vile personal attacks because I am a Brahmin or TVK Stooge or Sanghi or whatever, I will tell them this: unlike you dynasts I grew up with nothing. I studied in Tamil medium schools. I know how to live on nothing. I have dedicated the remainder of my life to make Bharat self reliant in technology while reviving our rural areas, the soul of our eternal sanatana civilization.

I will not be intimidated by their attacks. I am unafraid of death, why would I be afraid of the mere DMK?

And if they had any conscience they can return the money they looted (they know there they keep it) and then they can attack my character.

I will now go back to optimizing the code of our compiler!
