As we kick off this auspicious season, I encourage everyone—whether you’re celebrating Ramadan or not—to take a moment to reflect on the past year and celebrate your own community as we head further into 2025.
Ramadan Mubarak!
I want to wish every Michigangander who celebrates, a blessed and peaceful beginning of Ramadan. Ramadan gives us an opportunity to remind ourselves of the beautiful communities that make our state and country stronger.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a champion of human rights, peace, and social justice. His presidency and lifelong service, including his work through the Carter Center, reflect unparalleled compassion and leadership. From fighting disease to advancing democracy and speaking out for Palestinian rights, his legacy continues to inspire.
Our thoughts are with his family and all who mourn this extraordinary loss. May his courage and vision guide generations to come.
Hamza and Ali are stoked Big Gretch shared their artwork! I’m so thankful for such caring and loving kiddos that always put family first. 🥹❤️
And thanks @GovWhitmer for making Michigan the greatest state!
Thanksgiving is about spending time with our loved ones, and for kids like Ali and Hamza, they’re thankful for their family. To Ali, Hamza, their mama, their cousins, and every Michigander, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by your loved ones!

Earlier this week, I sat down with leaders of the Arab American and Muslim communities for a productive discussion about how we can continue working together to keep people safe and help our families thrive. As Michiganders, we must always come together to listen and support our neighbors.
Vice President Kamala Harris engaged with Arab and Muslim American leaders who urged her to push for an end to the war in Gaza and Lebanon. Emgage Action’s CEO @WaelAlzayat emphasized the urgency: “We want her to push the president to end the war. We want her to commit to ending the war if she becomes president. We want her to speak directly to our communities about the pain and suffering.” He also highlighted the community’s critical needs, particularly for expanding evacuation efforts from Lebanon and immediate humanitarian aid. The violence in the Middle East is impacting voters in battleground Michigan, pushing some Arab and Muslim American voters to consider leaving the presidential box on the ballot blank or vote for a third-party candidate.
Me: "As an imam, are you ok endorsing a candidate who was found liable for rape?
Imam Belal: "We are not going to agree with everything he did. He's 78 years old."
I challenged the Michigan imam who endorsed Donald Trump at his rally.

Apparently, we’re not “grassroots”
Stop your WhatsApp forwards and come from behind that mic and camera.
Texting your boys and adding “Imam” to your names mean nothing. It won’t bring change. Do some real organizing and knock on some doors. Your podcast views don’t vote.

My thoughts on Muslim voters, the presidential election, the awful choice between Harris & Trump on Gaza, the toxic online fighting over all this, & some of the dangerously false things folks are saying online.
(Please do watch it *before* you start slamming me in the replies.)
At our #MillionMuslimVotes event, Gov. @Tim_Walz, Democratic vice-presidential nominee, addressed the staggering and devastating destruction in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to the violence: ‘This war must end, and it must end now.’ Walz’s message stressed the need for dignity, freedom, and self-determination for the people of Gaza.
As we continue to build Muslim American political power, it is crucial that leadership addresses these urgent human rights issues.

It took an act of courage for @EmgageAction to endorse @KamalaHarris and @Tim_Walz, especially in light of the challenges faced by Muslim Americans as devastation continues in Gaza. We are proud to call them our valuable partner and are honored to build this coalition together.
