Neuroscience PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison• Studying the neurons and circuits involved in Memory • Easily distracted by poetry and music ✨
My debut short story Collection, "The Ivory Tower" was recently published by @ShabdAaweg as a chapbook. It is a collection of five fictional stories penned out of flickering moments of endearment, empathy, and exasperation.
Proud of Arsha (@UofIllinois) & Anubhav (@UWMadison). These talented master students @IITKanpur conceptualized & wrote this entire review - thanks Pooja for finalizing it! 👏 So grateful for our students who excel in both research & scientific writing: https://t.co/b86wPSpw3b
Wholesome PhD moment: My professor brought in his 35 year old laptop to class to run simulations. The laptop fell and just stopped working, and he just sat there looking like his world came crashing down.
And then it just fired up again, and the class erupted in cheers :')
Being a product of the "75%-attendance mandatory" system in DU, the most unsettling thing to me during PhD is that there is no attendance during one of our major courses; all the lecture videos are uploaded on canvas, and still almost EVERYONE shows up for class everyday :)
My high point from today-
Walked into a McDonalds in Madison, and saw an advertisement on their TV screen that said "McDonald's: as featured in Chak De! India" 🇮🇳
@DietPravda Judging from the comments, it is funny how engineers think they can excel at humanities, by eliminating the "human" from it. Comprehending a text isn't meaningful if one lacks the ability to connect it to the society, have empathy, and ask relevant questions. STEM grad here btw
@abandopa The more training we get in eliminating options and memorising previous year questions, the more we lose the ability to do that.
But of course, performance in interviews, in my opinion, does not in any way coincide with performance and research in a lab
@abandopa The thing about the current system in place is that candidates like us are often trained to select one correct option amongst 4 existing ones. In an interview setting, that is not the case. We have to conjure something up on the spot, which may not hit without the retrieval cue
also if you ever need a paper behind a paywall that's not on scihub- dm me- I have journal access, a family of NAS professors who raised me to hate elsevier, & a friend circle of researchers who all support open science- am more than happy to be captain hook the science pirate
Children who sleep less than 9 hours per night have significant differences in brain regions associated with memory, intelligence, and well-being compared to their peers who sleep 9 or more hours per night.

A 🧵 on burnout
Yesterday I learned that when people are burnt out, their amygdala enlarges. For all you non-neuroscientists, here's what that means and why it's important. 1/
