When the cricketers and celebrities of Pakistan are afraid to speak up for Pakistan's biggest public figure, Imran Khan, it is India's cricket legend Kapil Dev who has called for "fair treatment and some ethics" regarding Imran Khan's incarceration.

Unfortunately, this has been the history of Pakistan. We have hanged our prime ministers and imprisoned our heroes, as we saw in the case of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and the late Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan respectively. The nation has not seen Imran Khan for three years. His family has not seen him for the past seven months. Court proceedings are held inside the jail so that the public cannot see their leader. His appeals are not being heard by the appellate courts because the allegations and convictions against him are politically motivated and lacking merit. The Constitution has been amended twice to ensure that he remains in jail. The judicial system has been undermined so that he cannot be released.

He won the people's mandate from behind bars, but that mandate was taken away after his electoral symbol was withdrawn.

Imran Khan is in jail, and so are the 250 million people of Pakistan, because they cannot freely express what they feel and have been deprived of fundamental democratic rights—the freedom of expression and the right to vote for their chosen representatives.
