Adeeb also makes a powerful historical argument about India’s plural inheritance. If Mughal history is removed from textbooks, he asks rhetorically, should we also remove the monuments and cultural legacy associated with that period—the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the Taj Mahal?

His underlying message is simple:

You cannot selectively erase history without impoverishing the history of India itself.

He then moves to accountability. Whether someone is a politician, activist or thinker, Adeeb argues, they should ask where the enormous amounts of public money being spent are going—and insist that those responsible eventually provide an account.

He further claims that many communal conflicts historically had an economic dimension, arguing that Muslim-owned crafts and businesses were displaced in the aftermath of communal violence. That is a serious historical claim and should be examined through evidence rather than treated as an established fact merely because it is asserted in an interview.

Adeeb has a long record of speaking on secularism, minority rights and the RSS. In earlier interviews, he has criticised the Congress for what he called its diluted secularism while also arguing that the party historically did not make Muslims feel that they did not belong to India.

The larger question

India's history cannot be reduced to the history of one religion, one dynasty or one ideology.

A civilisation becomes stronger when it remembers everything—not when it remembers selectively.

And democratic politics requires something even more important:

Power must be questioned, public money must be accounted for, and historical claims must survive scrutiny rather than propaganda.
