Ghazni is still relevant in 2026 because he demolished the great Krishna temple in Mathura.

In 1018 he rode into the city after breaking the nearby fort of Mahaban. Mathura sat on the Yamuna, stone-walled, crowded with shrines to Vasudeva-Krishna.

His own secretary, al-Utbi, wrote that the central temple was so vast Mahmud said it would take two hundred years and a hundred million dinars to build another like it.

Then he ordered the temples burned with naphtha and fire.
Gold idols were melted. Silver images were smashed. Later chroniclers said a thousand shrines in the city and district went down.

For 20 days the army stayed. When they left, the richest Krishna pilgrimage city in the north was blackened stone and empty treasuries.

That is why the name still appears in 2026. On 24 September, at Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath spoke of Ghazni at Somnath: priests offered gold; the invader said he had not come only to loot, but to break the Sanatan tradition.

That is why Ghazni has not become a closed chapter.

Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation, was a staunch advocate of vegetarianism and ahimsa. I did not know he was "Hindutva mob" as Tunku Varadarajan characterizes.

As for the idea that serving meat and alcohol is the only "civilized eating": in America and in Europe, many thoughtful people would consider vegetarianism and ahimsa as a major contribution of Dharmic civilisation. Jainism is entirely devoted to it and so is ISKCON. They are not "Hindutva mobs".

Thirukkural has an entire chapter on not eating meat and that was over 2000 years ago.

And most Hindus do not eat meat during festive occasions, like Ganesh Chaturthi today, even those who normally eat meat.

If Varadarajan had a shred of respect for his own heritage, rather than shamlessly parading his arrogant ignorance, he would have researched all this. Instead he chooses to lecture the little brown natives to please his imagined "civilized" masters.

Finally, if Indians were to adopt the standard American diet, we do not have the land, we do not have the water, and we do not have the energy, to feed ourselves.
