Neglecting Dads’ Mental Health May Harm Kids’ Development
Mental health experts are calling for routine screening of new fathers, citing growing evidence that a father’s emotional well-being is critical to child development.
Depression and anxiety in fathers during the perinatal period are linked to negative outcomes in children’s emotional, cognitive, and language growth.
Despite this, paternal mental health is often overlooked, though 14% of fathers experience postpartum depression.
Men are also less likely to recognize or report symptoms, making early screening even more essential.
Tools like PRAMS for Dads are helping public health officials track the needs of fathers in real time and direct support where it’s needed most.
This shift reflects a broader recognition that supporting fathers supports the whole family.

Listening to the Voices of Autism
Researchers analyzed more than 700,000 Reddit posts from autism-related forums to better understand the interests and inner lives of autistic individuals.
Using natural language processing, they found recurring themes including music, food, friendship, and emotional expression.
The conversations were generally supportive, offering a rich portrayal of neurodivergent experiences outside clinical settings.
Rather than framing autism as a disorder, the posts reflected a shared identity rooted in difference, not deficiency.
Many users expressed the emotional strain of masking their traits to conform to neurotypical norms.
The study calls for a shift in how autism is understood, moving from diagnosis toward appreciation of cognitive diversity.
SSRIs Restore Brain Function in Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s disease is marked by toxic tau buildup and early dysfunction in the brain’s serotonin system—especially the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN).
A new study found that patients taking SSRIs had lower levels of phosphorylated tau-181 in their blood, suggesting reduced pathological burden.
Importantly, SSRIs appeared to restore DRN metabolic activity in Alzheimer’s patients, but not in healthy controls.
Since the DRN plays a central role in serotonin release, this metabolic boost may reflect revived serotonergic signaling.
However, cognitive outcomes were inconsistent across standard tests, with some measures showing improvement and others not.
The research highlights a biological benefit of SSRIs in Alzheimer’s but underscores the need for nuanced cognitive assessment and longitudinal data.
Lowering Blood Pressure May Cut Dementia Risk by Up to 15%
Researchers have shown that reducing systolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals can significantly lower their risk of dementia and cognitive impairment.
The China Rural Hypertension Control Project tracked 33,995 adults across 326 villages for four years.
Those who received enhanced care experienced a systolic BP drop of 22 mm Hg and were less likely to develop dementia compared to peers receiving usual care.
About 15% fewer dementia cases were observed in the intervention group.
These results suggest that better hypertension control may be a key tool in public health efforts to slow the rising global burden of dementia.
The study also opens the door to future AI-powered prediction and personalized prevention approaches.
Brain Neurons Act Like Traffic Lights to Control Every Move
Researchers have discovered that neurons in the basal ganglia, specifically in the Substantia Nigra pars reticulata (SNr), do more than just suppress unwanted movements—they precisely control when to start and stop specific actions.
By recording brain activity in mice during goal-directed behaviors, scientists found that different SNr neurons activate or pause at distinct phases of movement, such as reaching or grasping.
This pattern suggests that the basal ganglia operate not as a simple brake, but as a finely tuned timing mechanism, like traffic lights at a busy intersection.
Each neuron sends dynamic “go” or “stop” signals that allow complex behaviors to unfold smoothly.
When researchers artificially activated these neurons using optogenetics, they were able to block movements entirely, confirming their regulatory role.
These insights reshape our understanding of motor control and offer new potential for treating movement disorders like Parkinson’s, where this precision signaling breaks down.
AI Shows Higher Emotional IQ than Humans
A new study reveals that large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT, outperform humans on emotional intelligence (EI) tests traditionally used in psychology and workplace settings.
Researchers subjected six AI models to five standardized EI assessments involving emotionally charged scenarios.
The AIs scored an average of 82%, significantly higher than the 56% achieved by human participants.
Beyond answering EI questions, ChatGPT-4 was also able to generate entirely new, high-quality EI tests in record time.
These tests proved just as reliable and realistic as human-designed ones, suggesting AIs can reason about emotions with surprising nuance.
The study highlights the potential for emotionally intelligent AI to support human roles in education, coaching, and conflict resolution when guided by expert oversight.

Dead on Arrival.

I watched the entire press conference with Zelensky. There was 40 minutes of discussion up to the argument. Most people saw at most the last ten minutes. The whole video gives the proper context.
When I first watched the argument without the proper context, I thought it was possible that Trump and Vance ambushed Zelensky or were even trying to humiliate him. That's not what happened.
You had 40 minutes of calm conversation. Vance made a point that didn't attack Zelensky and wasn't even addressed to him, and Zelensky clearly started the argument.
In the first 40 minutes, Zelensky kept trying to go beyond what was negotiated in the deal. When Trump was asked a question, it was always "we'll see." Zelensky made blanket assertions that there would be no negotiating with Putin, and that Russia would pay for the war. When Trump said that it was a tragedy that people on both sides were dying, Zelensky interjected that the Russians were the invaders.
For his part, Trump made clear that the US would continue delivering military aid. All Zelensky had to do was remain calm for a few more minutes and they would've signed a deal.
The argument started when Trump pointed out that it would be hard to make a deal if you talk about Putin the way Zelensky does. Vance interjects to make the reasonable point that Biden called Putin names and that didn't get us anywhere.
The Zelensky/Trump dynamic was calm and stable. It was when Vance spoke that Zelensky started to interrogate him. Throughout the press conference to that point, everyone was making their arguments directly to the audience. Zelensky decided to challenge Vance and ask him hostile questions. He went back to his point that Putin never sticks to ceasefires, once again implying that negotiations are pointless. Why on earth would you do this? Then came the fight we all saw.
Zelensky was minutes away from being home free, and he would have had the deal and new commitments from the Trump administration. The point Vance made was directed against Biden and the media, taking them to task for speaking in moralistic terms. This offended Zelensky, and that began the argument.
I've been a fan of Zelensky up to this point, but this showed so much incompetence, if not emotional instability, that I don't see how he recovers from this. The relationship with the administration is broken. Ukraine should probably go with new leadership at this point.
