@brenenwynd If we’re painting with a broad brush, let’s also talk about researchers who let ideology override data and spent years trying to bury this taxa. Bad actors exist on all sides.
@brenenwynd@JGN_Paleo@ExpeditionLive I’ve actually met the collector there was a real effort to find an academic home for the specimen, but they also had to do right by the landowner. It’s not as simple as “chasing a sale”.
@brenenwynd Strange take. Private collectors do work with locals, often more consistently than institutions bound by grant cycles. With limited academic funding, who exactly is going to save the thousands of fossils eroding away each year? Without collectors, they’re gone.

This holotype specimen of Styxosaurus snowii was found in Niobrara Chalk in Logan County, Kansas. The plesiosaur, which once swam in the Western Interior Seaway, was first described by KU paleontologist Samuel W. Williston in 1890.
@Chalkologist Absolutely! The preparation and study phase will take some time but anybody is welcome to come view the specimen on public display. Our exhibit (and lab) can be viewed at the El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City Kansas.
