Surbiton Chess Club is a sociable #chess club in SW London. We have teams of all strengths playing in 4NCL, Surrey and Thames Valley leagues. Wednesdays 7.30pm.
The sun may or may not shine, but that is something which we cannot control.
However, whatever the London weather will throw at us, you are guaranteed a great time at ChessFest 2024.
All events are free for all!
Just bring sun cream, an umbrella, skis and leave the rest to us.
In a nail biting finish to the season, Surbiton B drew with Kingston B last night, thus winning Thames Valley Division 2 by 2 board points. This means promotion, which is just as well as Surbiton A will be demoted from Division 1. “Mission accomplished” said Captain Nick Faulks.
Playing Kingston 2 away, Surbiton 1 won 2-5. Sadly, this doesn’t change much in Surrey Division 2. Ashtead 1 are still the winners and are due promotion, and Surbiton 1 have to be content with 2nd place and staying in this division next season. #Chess#Surrey
With a 5.5-2.5 victory over Wimbledon last night, Epsom Chess Club became 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐘 for the first time in our history!
80-year-old Peter Lee (pictured), who returned to competitive chess with Epsom this year, recorded the win that took us over the line.
@KingstonChess showed why they sit at the top of Thames Valley Division 1 - and why we are at the bottom - in our match last night. But congrats to Sean and @GrahamPAlcock for their well-earned draws. #Chess
In Surrey’s Ellam Trophy (Division 3), Surbiton 2 narrowly beat Dorking 1. It means Surbiton 2 is safe from relegation. Well played all! Guildford 2 already won the trophy. #Chess
Following on from Surbiton Cs success earlier this week, Surbiton B and Surbiton D also recorded wins! Things don’t usually go this well, what is going on? #Discombobulating #Chess
In Thames Valley Division 3, Surbiton C beat Ealing C away. This puts Surbiton C in 2nd place in the table with one more match to play vs the same team. Well played all! #Chess
In Surrey’s Beaumont Cup, Surbiton took on Ashtead away. It was close, but we lost 4-3. Ashtead’s winning streak (in this division) now stands at 5 matches and they are best placed to gain promotion to the Surrey Trophy next year. #Surrey#Chess
Playing at Wimbledon, Surbiton C narrowly defeated Wimbledon B 2.5-3.5. This currently puts Surbiton C in 2nd place in Thames Valley Division 3. We have 2 matches left v Ealing C. #Chess
On Leap Day, Surbiton A played Wimbledon A away. Unfortunately, a lot of our players were unavailable, but we still fielded a team. In the end we lost, but it wasn’t as one-sided as expected. Several drew against higher rated opponents. #Chess
Surbiton’s C team was in action at home on Wednesday, facing Ealing B. Unfortunately, we came 2nd in this match, although it was competitive. Ealing B now lead Division 3. #Chess
Surbiton’s A, B and C teams were in action in the Thames Valley league this week. First up was our B team, playing away to Hounslow B. The team won, and winning players included our octogenarian Chairman, Paul Durrant. #Chess
Surbiton beat TV1 leaders Hammersmith 4-2! They were less strong than usual on boards 5-6 (because of playing away?), but otherwise were a strong side. Congratulations to Chris Briscoe for his amazing win on board 1! #Chess
Playing away to Staines A, Surbiton B emerged victorious in a match that saw four of our players win. Congratulations to winners Graham Alcock, Paul Durrant, John Rennocks and Paul McCauley. #Chess
In Thames Valley Division 3, Surbiton C beat Richmond & Twickenham D 5-1. Wimbledon B lead the division on 6.5 match points and 40 game points, but Ealing B, Richmond & Twickenham C and Surbiton C have more matches to play. #Chess
In Surrey’s Beaumont Cup, Surbiton 1 beat Coulsdon 2 5-2 at home. This was an improvement on the away leg, when we drew. This puts Surbiton 1 at the top of the table, with hopes for promotion to the Surrey Trophy. Ashtead 1 have played fewer matches though. #Chess#Surrey
Surbiton’s @4NCL weekend saw the team win one match and lose another. This puts us mid-table in Division 3 Knights, on 4 match points. #Chess
