Thanks the Economist for confirming our reporting from May.
Mogadishu has primarily become more secure, thriving and modern thanks to Turkey’s security assistance

Somalia’s capital city has been synonymous with violence ever since the central state collapsed in the 1990s. Yet in recent years it has undergone a quiet transformation. We explain how https://t.co/7fMxd6Lvi0
Somalia’s national airline is expected to start flying next month, resuming a service that has been grounded since the Horn of Africa country descended into civil war in 1991 https://t.co/j3CYC1GaRv
There has never been a president in our lifetimes who has been as openly and brazenly racist as this president.
I mean, how can anyone defend it? Meanwhile, the media and much of the opposition party is obsessing over a Twitch streamer’s clips.
Somalia's state minister for foreign affairs Ali Omar suggesting Somalia's federal government might take DP World to court for not vacating concessions they have in Bosaso and Berbera
Puntland and Somaliland have their own laws and will likely block Mogadishu's efforts - but it shows that there is growing resentment among central governments towards the UAE's Axis of Secessionists in Africa
The people I see in the photo are knowledgeable, credible professionals.
Somalia’s Chief of Defence is well educated, with a master’s degree and staff college education, and he is also a warrior. He led, and was on the front lines of, the campaigns in which the SNA cleared Al-Shabaab from Sabiid, Awdhegle and Bariire.
@AbdullahiJihan is a well-known defence policy expert. It was President Farmaajo who, in 2019, appointed her as the first female Director General of the Ministry of Defence. I see her as an up-and-coming leader—perhaps Somalia’s version of Monica Juma.
General Barise is also a brilliant military officer who has received advanced defence education from U.S. military colleges as well as Kenya’s Defence Staff College. He too was appointed Army Chief of Staff by President Farmaajo.
So these are not HSM’s people; these are defence professionals who know the ATMIS and AUSSOM file better than almost anyone else. That is simply a fact.
As for the President’s daughter, she happens to work for the state. Although she is often in the news because her father is the President and appointed her as an adviser, I have met her twice, briefly, and she came across as a polite and smart young woman. I am sure she is not the only child of a president sitting in that meeting in Kampala.
Leader of Turkey’s new main secular opposition party, New Party, takes ablution amidst the interest of the surrounding crowd
For those of us who know a thing or two about Turkey realize how huge the symbolism of this is
For years, the main point of attack on Erdoğan was that he was religious. Even back when Turkish economy was at its peak, at least 30 per cent of society rejected him with zeal just because he was someone who prayed and didn’t drink alcohol
I remember that a Turkish journalist once said that if Erdogan had drunk a beer in his life he would have made an excellent prime minister
For many years, it was the Islamist politicians in Turkey who had to pretend that they were secularist. This was followed by a period of secularist reluctance where they were saying they were also religious but didn’t believe in using religion
Now, they are actually using Islam more than the most Islamist group in the region.
But as Erdogan once correctly said ‘biz dini yaşarız, tüccarlığını siz yapıyorsunuz’ which doesn’t have a perfect English translation but it can be paraphrased as: Islamists don’t pretend to be abiding by faith to gain votes. Islam is their bread and butter. But secularists who do religious poses and remember mosques every election cycle are actually the ones using Islam for political purposes.
With the free time you or your kids have this summer:
Make it a point to volunteer at a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a nursing home, or in a refugee camp.
What is learned in these spaces is often far more valuable than anything taught in a classroom.
You can’t change the world if you don’t see it properly. This type of stuff gives you perspective, softens your heart, and shapes your thinking.
The United States appreciates continued law enforcement cooperation with the Federal Government of Somalia. Recent coordination demonstrates how close partnerships, grounded in respect for each country’s laws and practices, can enhance security, deny safe haven to criminals, and help keep Americans and Somali citizens safe. We hope this cooperation sets a strong standard for future efforts.
