LLM Reasoning 101 - Chain-of-Thought (CoT) Foundations (3/N):

Let's look at an interesting study that challenges the assumptions we’ve made so far about CoT prompting.

My top 3 takeaways on: "To CoT or Not to CoT? Chain-of-Thought Helps Mainly on Math and Symbolic Reasoning" (Sprague et al., 2024)

➡️CoT shines brightest on math & symbolic tasks (+14% improvement!) but shows minimal gains on other reasoning types
➡️Impact depends on computation needed - more complex calculations = bigger CoT boost
➡️Modern models (Claude/GPT-4) use CoT selectively now, recognizing where it helps most

Why this matters? This helps explain when we should (and shouldn't!) use CoT prompting in today's models. Sometimes simpler is better! Something that holds true even of more powerful reasoners like DeepSeek-R1.

And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page.
