+1. Go further, use these components but also explore is this the right problem to solve? How well do I know the problem space. We PMs are adept in writing about what we perceive the needs are — not necessary the 'actual' unmet needs that a user/customer is craving to solve.
In B2B, everyone talks about how you should be clear on “what problem you are solving”.
To make this work in practice, split this question into 3 components:
- Buyer problem
- Champion motivation
- User problem
This format forces rigor, creates clarity, and gets you buy-in.
A/B testing — often thought-about but poorly executed. How often have you heard: "we should do an A/B testing and find out." And, how often did you follow through?
Lots of temptation to end of your A/B tests early.
Check out this image. 99% probability winner! We're killing it! Evangelize the insights to the team!
The only problem is that this is actually an A/A test (variations identical). Don't end tests when the tool tells you.
@alanklement@saeedwkhan A roadmap is not intended to be a plan but a path to realize the strategic goals.
However, in reality a roadmap has become a proxy for a delivery plan w/ timeline.
@alanklement@gibsonbiddle Indeed. Perhaps they need @gibsonbiddle back there! Just kidding. Love to hear Gib's insights — what does it take for a turnaround and go beyond the subscriber count (as a yardstick).
Well, after five years. There are many more enemies: competitors, password-sharers, etc.
Lifecycle of a business. Crest and trough — find a new wave or perish.
@chrishlad Yes, work gets done. However, it's difficult to know if you're making progress in the right direction if you're not strategic.
I guess I understand your intent, though. Prefer action over analysis-paralysis.
@PMDiegoGranados Put the onus on the requester to do a bit more thoughtful work:
Ask the person how that requested thing fits into the defined strategy. If it doesn’t, ask them to provide a hypothesis — by doing X, here’s how our target audience derive value. Plus metrics to validate the bet.
@stephanie_leue 1. Leading and expanding — portfolio thinking
2. Metrics or proxies — hypothesis-driven thinking
3. Roadmap tying to the above two — storytelling
4. Build moats — competitive landscape
Above all else, start with customer jobs-to-be-done.
