Having a lot of publications can be very convincing to people in your area, but because metrics and publication rates vary so widely across areas, it is much more important to have 1 result that people in a far away area can understand than having 10 results that only people in your niche can understand.
This is not a Disease among children, It is a symptom of the disease.
The real disease is bad policy, chronic underfunding, and neglect of education and research by the Govt. of India.
Tata was thoughtful person: he wouldn't talk much, but would listen carefully. And he was always well prepared.
He even took time and inaugurated our (first) office. It was a wonderful gesture.
Of course, he had a huge impact on the country. A worthy life. RIP.
Some 25 years back, Ratan Tata was the president of the IISc court. And he would ask why there was no entrepreneurship by faculty at IISc.
This nudge came at the right time. The director, Goverdhan Mehta, was receptive, and so was the then SID head, H. P. Kincha.
It's been a pleasure working with Manu (@gaur_manu) for 1+ year. From teacher forcing to training models with RL, Manu works for the ideal "fun of doing research"! 🤓 He is now looking for internships/PhD positions, get him! Never a dull moment with him around in the lab 😀
I also believe that disruption of collaborations with Israeli research groups is an extreme and stupid step and that would achieve nothing in the larger context. Govt != people on the ground.
This is as stupid as dunking on the entire HSS researchers.
This reminds of the quote by an IITB CS prof “Aadhar project clearly demonstrates that we have a huge set of engineers/technocrats who have no training in/understanding of humanities” (not verbatim)
We build for Bharat (from BLR)
without any understanding of its social structs
The media must stop amplifying the voices of fringe groups with ideological agendas. Misrepresenting a small, unofficial student faction as the stance of the entire IIT community is misleading and damaging. Responsible journalism matters.
