BP paid £422 million in windfall tax last year, and in the first three months of 2026 alone, its profits more than doubled to £2.4 billion.
These are BP's own figures, and they prove two things:
✅ Energy firms can afford the windfall tax, and
✅ It's raising real money that should be going to help families struggling with their bills.
Thankfully the Chancellor is now closing a loophole that let companies like BP cut their UK tax bill using overseas corporate structures.
🗣️The public agrees: 64% of Brits support taxing oil and gas companies' excess profits, according to YouGov polling out today. Just 16% oppose it.

Just watched @GMB with Kwasi Kwarteng not really understanding the negative impact of marginal pricing where gas typically sets prices for the whole market. It needs to end, it's damaging lives, it's damaging Britain.
📈From 1st July, average energy bills will rise by £221, a 13.5% increase, and £820 more than households were paying before the 2021 energy crisis began. The main driver is the cost of gas, which is 25% up on last quarter.
Forecasts point to further price increases in October, so households face a summer of suspense, not knowing whether they can cope this winter.
💷In the last three months, energy companies have made more than £3bn profits in UK operations alone, while millions of households are still carrying energy debt from previous winters.
🗣️The government must spell out what support will be available now, not later.

JULY ENERGY PRICE CAP TO RISE. The assessment period ended yesterday, so final predictions are coming in today showing a rough 13% likely rise (it'll be announced next Wed). Tonight @itvMLshow 7:15pm I'll talk you through how to prevent this & protect yourself. Don't miss it.
I worked it out. Don't add any attachments at all. Look for supplier under LPG and then change the field below to say heating oil. Submitted and it went through. I then sent the attachments by email. I shouldn't have had to do this though..it should be easier.
Just spent time filling in the heating oils support form @advicedotscot for elderly parents only for your site to register an error. No explanation. Looks like I'll have to resubmit. Their heating oil supplier of 50+ yrs not listed.

📋New analysis shows a single fossil fuel price shock could cost the UK far more than the entire transition to clean energy.
The reality is households are still dangerously exposed to volatile global oil and gas markets.
As prices surge again due to conflict in the Middle East, the lesson is clear: the only lasting protection is cutting reliance on fossil fuels through insulated homes, homegrown renewables and fairer energy pricing.

Oil price profiteering will not be tolerated, says Miliband. Perhaps asking for a reduction in VAT on heating oil given how much more treasury is unexpectedly receiving. Retail margins need to be regulated. Fair & transparent.

There might still be time to get some sort of saving and certainty as UK firms pull fixed energy deals as Iran war pushes up prices

Price forecasts for energy seems to suggest that come the summer and possibly the autumn that we are set for increases. If you can, fixed your costs at lower than April's price cap. If you pay against periodic bills, you are the most expensive, switch to DD & fix to save.
About 60% of households are on the standard default tariff cap, the price cap. Gas prices are rising dramatically. Fixing a deal today is likely to save you money and it could get you through next winter with some certainty. Think about, don't sit on the price cap.
As energy prices look set for yet more volatility it is important to understand what our prospective parliamentarians and parties have in mind. You can sign up to this free event using the form.

Yet again we look set for uncertainty in the costs of energy. Despite the experiences of COVID/CostOfLiving, no meaningful systemic changes have taken place. Changes to better protect people. We fail to learn. We fail people.
📈Wholesale gas is now 13% up on 2025 so far.
That matters because gas still drives UK electricity prices, meaning this surge risks pushing up the energy price cap from 1 July 2026, which had been forecast to fall.
Heating oil is also at a 12-month high, up 30% year on year, which is a major concern for rural households.
The immediate trigger is geopolitical tension in Iran and the wider region. But the real issue is our dependence on gas, with so much of it imported.
As long as UK energy bills are tied to volatile global gas markets, households will remain exposed to shocks like this.
The lasting solution is clear: cut demand through insulation, invest in homegrown renewables, and reform energy pricing so bills are no longer set by fossil fuel volatility.

@NEA_UKCharity Yep, totally agree. A fairer, lower cost option is essential for those with the least or with greatest need. It is surely affordable to protect people in a wealthy socially responsible country.
We're recruiting for new Trustees to join our board. Our Chair Iain explains why he finds the role rewarding and what we're looking for to ensure a diverse board going forward.
No. Ministers must ensure the system is on the side of consumers, not the energy giants that have generated more than £125 billion in UK profits since 2020.
