💰 Hackney Council has signed off £250,000 for new office furniture.

Hackney elected a new Mayor in May.

A Green Party Mayor who pledged to do things differently.

The council is on track to be £785 million in debt by 2028.

It plans to raise another £28 million from residents through council tax over the next few years.

Money is tight, apparently.

So what does the council sign off?

Excl: Whitehall officials are growing concerned about how little time Andy Burnham has spent in Downing Street since becoming Prime Minister.

At a Cabinet Office all-staff meeting earlier this week, First Secretary Louise Haigh even joked No10 was “extremely distressed” by how often the PM was away from the building – before stressing it was because he was “so dedicated and committed” to getting out around the country and delivering his agenda.

Haigh also told officials to “take your cue from the Prime Minister’s ambition”, saying he was “not the kind of politician that has to have a full plan before he starts diagnosing the problems in the country”.

She urged civil servants to bring forward ideas “no matter how risky or politically unpalatable it seems” and to “put it in front of us and let’s thrash it out”.

Animal rights campaigner, Anneka Svenska, was visited at home by two police officers and told to accept a police record, attend an “online thinking” course, or face arrest following comments she made on social media about the incineration of beagles at a company that breeds the dogs for use in medical research.

The police alleged that she had committed a crime under the Online Safety Act.

Anneka refused to accept this “community resolution disposal”, which would have remained on her police record, and, after she engaged a lawyer, the case has now been dropped.

Section 179 of the Online Safety Act was introduced by the last Conservative Government and made it a crime, punishable by up to 51 weeks in prison, to knowingly spread false information likely to cause harm. While the Bill was going through Parliament, the FSU warned it might be weaponised in this way to silence legitimate political speech.

Anneka doesn’t believe the information she spread about the company was false. In fact, she has documentary evidence which she says substantiates her claims. Until the Online Safety Act was passed, the company unhappy about comments like this would have had to bring a defamation claim in the civil courts.

Now, it seems, hurty words online can quickly become a police matter – and it seems that companies are now making criminal complaints as part of their brand protection strategies.

If you are visited by the police for a speech matter, we’d urge you to take specialist legal advice before accepting any form of caution or submitting to a re-education course. Members of the Free Speech Union can ask for our help if they find themselves in a similar situation.

If we rank the heroes and villains of the slave trade, the Church of England stands (alongside Quakers and Methodists) close to the top of the heroes’ table.
William Wilberforce, who pushed through the legislation to extirpate the foul business, was moved by his Anglican faith. So was John Newton, the former slave trader who repented, composed Amazing Grace and ended his days as a Church of England curate.
Thanks to them, and to hundreds of thousands of ordinary churchgoers who lent support to their campaigns, Britain not only abolished slavery in the parts of the world it controlled, but poured its blood and treasure into a long, gruelling and ultimately successful war against the slave trade everywhere else.
Does that story smack too much of patriotism and of “white saviour complex”? Well, the hundreds of young British men who, acting on their faith, gave their lives to hunting down slave ships after 1807 were white and, in this case, were literally saviours.
So were the Anglican missionaries who penetrated the African interior, often dying of tropical diseases, seeking to persuade local potentates to free their chattels.
So, arguably, were the taxpayers who gladly approved the spending of 1.8 per cent of GDP annually between 1808 and 1867 on global eradication: the most expensive moral foreign policy in human history.
That was meaningful restitution. Britain had been a player in the slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. When, like John Newton, it saw that it had been wrong, it sought to make good that wrong by liberating as many remaining slaves as it could, diverting ships to hunt down the Guineamen even at the height of its life-and-death struggle with Napoleon.
If slavery is your issue, you could help complete the Church’s abolitionist mission by taking the campaign to the countries where human bondage is most prevalent today: North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Afghanistan. But that does not carry the kudos of self-reproach.

🚨Puberty Blockers Trial Update🚨

I’m deeply saddened to announce that the High Court has refused permission for us to proceed to a full Judicial Review hearing in our pursuit to block the deeply unethical and highly dangerous puberty blockers trial.

This judgment does not negate the serious and avoidable harm that will be caused if this trial is allowed to proceed.

Vulnerable children should never be used as guinea pigs in medical experimentation that may lead them down a path towards irreversible physiological and emotional damage, including infertility.

This trial is the antithesis of child safeguarding and I will now be consulting with my lawyers regarding the possibility of an appeal.

Housing Secretary, Angela Rayner has forced through plans to build a controversial data centre on the site of the 360-year-old Truman brewery in east London despite a local backlash. Local residents have protested against the plans, calling for additional social homes instead of a data centre. No one voted for these data centres. Yet the Labour government are ramming them through despite local community objections. Shameful.

Without any mandate, Spain’s deeply unpopular Pedro Sánchez is violently and irreversibly transforming his country at a terrifying pace.
By importing young men in record numbers who actively despise European values, he has actively increased the risks of terrorism, rape and violence against the people he is supposed to serve.
But while he is particularly extreme, almost all Europe’s leaders are pushing - albeit at different speeds- in the same direction.
And as a result European voters will be pushed - many of them reluctantly - towards supporting hard line parties. We must hope that as those Parties achieve power, that acts as a pressure release that prevents something far uglier sweeping across Europe
It really is impossible to exaggerate how much harm Sánchez and his ilk are inflicting on Europe.
