We are putting way too much onus on the individual to prevent burnout. It is not merely the individual's responsibility to tackle burnout - because it's not an individual problem. Leadership must be central to any conversation about #burnout.
Sir David Attenborough told @AndersonCooper in 2020 about the last book he read, who’s influenced him the most, and whether or not he’s afraid of death. Attenborough turns 100 today.
The most underrated act of kindness is simply letting people be. Let them mispronounce a word, talk too much about a show they love, or get excited about something you don't quite understand. Everyone has something that lights them up, let them shine, even if it's not your thing.
Giving feedback isn’t a favourite part of the
job for many leaders.
That’s why I love the S-B-I model for feedback to help us all get much more specific.
Outline the situation (S), outline the observable behaviour (B), and then explain the impact that those behaviours had (I)
Really weird, but I’m agreeing with people whose previous opinions and political views I’ve opposed in the past. Why? They’re calling out behaviours we all despise. People like @FmrRepMTG@RepThomasMassie
I’m not American, but values based leadership is obvious when you see it.
"Turn off the sound and watch the movie."
To uncover the deeper meaning behind communication, I often encourage my clients to “turn off the sound” and observe the room. What are people’s faces, postures, and gestures telling you? In many cases, reading the face reveals more than hearing the words.
In corporate meetings, much goes unsaid. People may nod politely while quietly disagreeing. They may smile while feeling frustrated. They may claim their only concern is for the organization—when their real priority is protecting their own unit.
This doesn’t make them “bad” people; it just makes them human. We all balance personal and organizational interests. As leaders, the challenge is to see beyond the spoken words and understand what’s really happening beneath the surface. By training ourselves to notice expressions and body language, we can become far more effective in sensing hidden agendas and building trust.
Life is good.
