The object was first reported to the Minor Planet Center by the Catalina Sky Survey, with earlier detections by Pan-STARRS, and the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies @NASAJPL calculated its trajectory and impact location - all funded by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

This is only the 13th small object that has been detected in space prior to impact, most from @NASA’s routine planetary defense monitoring.

Britain built these enormous forts in dry docks. Then it towed them out to sea, and deliberately sank them.

Beginning in 1942, the Maunsell Sea Forts were floated to selected sandbanks in the Thames and Mersey estuaries. Once positioned, their bases were flooded until they settled on the seabed, leaving only the operational towers above the waves.

Inside were crew quarters, generators, water tanks, ammunition stores, searchlights, and anti-aircraft guns. Some larger complexes consisted of seven towers connected by narrow walkways and housed more than 100 men.

After the war, several became pirate radio stations. One was even transformed into the self-proclaimed Principality of Sealand!
