Some highlights include: an additional social worker in every school; smaller class size maximums; special education caseload caps; a $35K starting salary for paras; and 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all new parents. AMAZING! (2/8)
Last night, the Somerville School Committee passed a uninamous resolution directing the Superintendent to keep the Winter Hill School community together during next School year & asking the mayor for necessary funds in our budget for a building & transportation for students.
Joined Winter Hill school kids, parents, and educators today as the PTA and @svilleeducators gathered to deliver urgent care and calls for immediate action. The WHCS was closed today due to a bldg failure- this time a chunk of concrete breaking off and falling in a stairwell.
No one was hurt, as the school was closed at the time. Classes were canceled today as structural engineers consider what to do. The future is uncertain. I was asked to provide this statement for people in the Spanish speaking community. Happy to do that.
The Winter Hill Community Innovation School will be closed while structural engineers conduct a more thorough review of the building, after a piece of concrete fell onto a stairwell inside the school. https://t.co/dK6jINVK2L
This is a huge deal—concrete is falling from the ceilings at the Winter Hill school and it's a miracle no kids were hurt. We need funding for renovations NOW, not in 2026 as @katjballantyne would have it!

Next steps must come from @katjballantyne. It is time for her to match our urgency and expedite the process. We cannot wait any longer. We must move decisively to build a new school building as soon as possible. Our students deserve a healthy and safe building.
Today there was an emergency closure of the Winter Hill School because the building has been deemed unsafe after concrete fell through the ceiling where students often line up. This was not a surprise or unexpected. The building has been in a state of disrepair for years.
Educators & families have raised the alarm at City Council & School Committee for over a year. The lack of urgency from @katjballantyne is shocking. There is no public plan to address the building. No timelines funding sources or swing space plan for students during construction.
The Somerville Educators Union stands in solidarity with union educators in Melrose who are fighting for a fair contract, respect in the workplace, and the schools their students deserve.
We condone the withholding of their labor and encourage the members of the @MEAMelroseMA to remain steadfast in their demands for better working conditions for educators and better learning conditions for students.
We stand in solidarity with @HaverhillEd and @MaldenEduAssoc as they strike for better working conditions for their members and better learning conditions for their students!
We stand ready and willing to offer whatever support may be needed for their strike efforts, including picketing and inducing support by other public employees.
The Somerville Educators Union supports @HaverhillEd and @MaldenEduAssoc in their pending strike and we stand in solidarity with our union siblings fighting for dignity and a fair contract.
We condone withholding labor if necessary and encourage HEA and MEA to remain resilient and steadfast in their demands for better working conditions for their members and better learning conditions for their students.
The @svilleeducators settled a contract that starts education support professional (paraprofessional) pay at $35,000 per year. Paying ESPs above poverty levels can be done.
Current and retired Belmont members support a fair contract for Melrose educators. The @meamelrosema is fighting for prep/collaboration time, a living wage for ESPs, and salary increase that keeps up with the cost of living.
