SWA Participated in the High-Level Mine Action Coordination Meeting

Mogadishu, Somalia 24 June 2026

The Somali Women Association (SWA) participated in the High-Level Mine Action Coordination Meeting held in Mogadishu on 24 June 2026. The meeting was organized by the Somali Explosive Management Authority (SEMA) with support from UNMAS and officially opened by the Director General of the Ministry of Internal Security of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Federal Government, Federal Member States, SEMA, the United Nations, international and national organizations, and mine action partners to strengthen coordination, enhance information sharing, and identify practical solutions to reduce the impact of explosive hazards across Somalia.

During the meeting, SWA presented its field experience from Puntland, highlighting the humanitarian challenges faced by communities affected by recent security operations, particularly in the Calmiskaad and Calmadow areas.

SWA noted that the recent military operations have increased concerns about the presence of explosive remnants of war (ERW) and other explosive hazards in areas where fighting has taken place. These risks continue to threaten civilians, especially pastoral communities, displaced families, women, and children returning to or moving through affected areas.

SWA emphasized the urgent need to expand Mine Risk Education (MRE) and community awareness activities in Puntland, with particular attention to Calmiskaad and Calmadow, where communities require greater support to recognize and safely respond to explosive hazards. SWA also highlighted the importance of conducting assessments, marking hazardous areas where necessary, and supporting clearance activities to improve community safety and humanitarian access.

In addition, SWA encouraged stronger collaboration between mine action actors and humanitarian organizations by integrating Mine Risk Education into ongoing humanitarian programmes, including Protection, Food Security, WASH, and Livelihoods, to ensure that vulnerable communities receive both life-saving assistance and essential safety information.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen national coordination, improve information sharing, support the advancement of Somalia's mine action framework, and mobilize additional resources to address the growing risks posed by explosive hazards.

SWA welcomes the outcomes of the meeting and reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Government of Somalia, SEMA, UNMAS, and humanitarian partners to strengthen community awareness, protect vulnerable populations, and contribute to safer and more resilient communities across Puntland and Somalia.

Community Engagement & Capacity Strengthening – May 2026

In May 2026, the Somali Women Association continued its community engagement and sensitization activities across 10 villages in Bosaso District, Bari Region: Af-Urur, Galgalato, Jiingada, Kalabayr, Yalho, Dalweyn, Ciiradhame, Geesaqabad, Kobdhexaad, and Jeedaal.

The sessions focused on strengthening the capacity of Village Relief Committees and enhancing community understanding of the effective implementation of Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs and livestock fodder support interventions. Through interactive discussions and practical guidance, participants reinforced key principles of transparency, accountability, community participation, and effective project implementation.

The active engagement and commitment demonstrated by community members, local leaders, and Village Relief Committees continue to strengthen local ownership and promote sustainable, community-led humanitarian action.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all participants and stakeholders for their valuable contributions and continued collaboration.

Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities and improving the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance.

We, the Somali Women Association, represented by our Puntland Food Security Cluster Coordinator/Focal Person, attended the Humanitarian Drought Coordination Meeting held at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Puntland.

The meeting was attended by the Humanitarian Coordinator for UNOCHA Somalia, Mr. Alex, during his visit to Puntland, alongside the Ministry’s leadership, including the Minister and Vice Minister, as well as Food Security Cluster partners. The discussions focused on strengthening coordination and collective action to address the ongoing drought and humanitarian needs across Puntland.
