Thumb cut off Peruvian mercenary in Russian army to gain access to bank account

A post by 26-year-old Peruvian Oscar Alberto Hualpa Macera appeared on August 28 in a group dedicated to Latin Americans in Russia. The author of the post reported that he came to the war and did not refuse to go to the front, "bravely fighting against drones" even after being wounded in the leg and concussed by a mine explosion. However, he was tortured for two days to gain access to his bank account and card, after which they intended to kill him and pass it off as being missing in action. According to him, his other comrades gave up their bank account passwords and died. In the comments, the mercenary specified that he was tortured by a commander with the call sign "Asik," who cut off his right thumb (this exact injury is visible in the publication's photographs), and also reported that he is currently in Luhansk, an investigation is underway against those who tortured him, but an effort is being made to sweep the case under the rug.

In correspondence with the editorial office, Oscar confirmed this information, as well as the fact that he remains in Luhansk for now and is awaiting repatriation home, having sent his documents to his family, who filed a statement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru. He also sent a video showing his right hand without the thumb.

Latin American residents are actively being recruited for the war between Russia and Ukraine on both sides. As Sota has previously written, Latin Americans arriving in Russia often do not expect to be sent to the front lines, counting instead on rear-guard work, though there are also those who voluntarily become mercenaries. Groups dedicated to Latin Americans in Russia are full of contract service advertisements and posts by relatives of those who have gone missing in the war.
