Starting a thread to keep track of my thoughts as I read through The Brothers Karamazov.
Not a literary expert, just a regular guy for the first time getting into a book everyone says it’s one of the greatest novels ever written. I have also heard it described as Russian Jerry Springer meets existential crisis. Sold.
What should I keep an eye out for? Anyone else read it recently? I’m genuinely curious what other people get out of the book.

Matt Fradd: “What advice do you have for someone watching this who’s newly married or who is about to be?”
Peter Kreeft: “The last view I had of my wife about an hour after she died… I fell in love with her again. Here is a wasted, emaciated, wrinkled, suffering body. It’s as beautiful as a crucifix. Because that body ain’t gonna last, but the soul is. So, if you don’t love her soul but just love her body, then don’t get married.”
Dave Ramsey tells 62 year old with $3,5000,000 he can retire and running out of money would be impossible
Dave: “Do you have a 401(k) nest egg?”
Caller: “I've got 401(k)s and IRAs. No pension”
Dave: “How much is in all those accounts?”
Caller: “$3,500,000”
Dave: “What do you make a year?”
Caller: “$175,000”
Dave: “You understand that $3.5 million invested in good growth stock mutual funds, if it averaged 10%, would produce $350,000 in income without touching the nest egg. Which is twice what you make now”
Caller: “But there are still going to be years when it's up and years when it's down”
Dave: “The down years very seldom are below 5%. Hardly ever. Maybe don't take the whole $350,000. Maybe take $200,000 and let it grow by $150,000 to cover the down years. It's impossible for you to go through this money before you die”

What an appalling speech the Mayor of New York delivered for the 250th anniversary of the nation.
Sadly, it reflects the view of America propagated for years by Howard Zinn and his like-minded colleagues in the universities and believed by armies of the young: a dark, oppressive country where common people are denigrated by tyrants and oligarchs, where immigrants are treated with contempt, where those with “soft hands” hold the wealth created by those with dirty hands.
No sensible person would claim that our country is without flaws, but the relentlessly negative picture painted by Mayor Mamdani is just absurd.
And it is the fruit of the Marxism that, sadly, is all the rage today.
I forget who said this, but to understand the European mind, you must remember these are the descendants of people who heard about a whole new continent and said, "Nah I'm good."
