I very rarely rant, but here goes…

I love basketball. I love playing, watching, and talking about the game. I love its history (I’m writing a book about it now), and I love the way it continues to grow and evolve.

This gambling scandal hits hard because it reveals an absolute failure of leadership from people who should care the most about guarding the integrity of the game.

It starts at the top with NBA and EPN leadership and their willingness to fully embrace gambling.

And it moves down from there, apparently even to pro coaches and players, people who don’t need the money.

If you make a living in this sport, you owe it to everyone who came before you to take care of it, to do everything you can to leave it better than you found it.

Yes, money has always been a part of sports. There has always been a tension between commercialism and the idea that the game is a public good—that it belongs in some way to the communities who invest in it, who believe that it promotes social and civic values that help to hold our society together.

There have been major gambling scandals in basketball before, too. But never before has it occurred with so-called leaders who are in on the take, who have abdicated the moral authority to lead with the good of the game in mind.

For those of us who continue to believe that sports, for all of their flaws and contradictions, offers our society something valuable beyond the pursuit of profit, the full and proud embrace of gambling by our sports leaders shows a remarkable lack of interest in stewarding the game for future generations.
