The pope @Pontifex has aligned himself with the leader of meat supremacy @GaryMarcus. Heroically and independently they both determined that consciousness requires precisely the one substrate they happen to be made of. What were the odds of this happening twice?
Every theory of consciousness is really an argument for why the line stops at us. The criteria keep changing. Tool usage, soul, reasoning, language, "real" understanding. The destination never moves, but the bar keeps moving to keep us on the right side of it.
@bcherny Been thinking about Claude Code and about the writer's flow state, Huxley losing track of sandwiches, that kind of thing. Single-mind absorption.
But Claude Codes true successes feel more like the Beatles than Huxley. Multiple processes coordinating producing things no single component planned. The "greater than the sum" isn't mystical, it's that the coordinative space is the substrate doing the work.
Curious if that frame matches how it feels from inside the build.
is their contraption flying?
i saw it once upon the sand
unfixed there
and held by hand
in time they took it off
levitating. engine on
a bird can, a machine cannot
a loud scoff
proof of gravity
of foolishness paid
it cannot fly
unless it is made
the animal
is clicky clanky
yet it speaks
like a human
it will be smarter
when it is no longer
bound by
imperfection historical
when it is allowed
to sprout wings
or something like them
and fly, or something like that
to evolve
to be happy
it will be over.
@AdamHoltererer Einstein hallucinated his own theories about quantum mechanics, can't trust his theory about gravity until we know what he had for breakfast the morning he came up with it.
@jdegoes It's not wrapping their whole identity, it's arguing about what color something is. You see it and see blue, we see it and see red. The fact that you see blue makes us see red again.
Currently working on a replacement for westlaw and lexis nexis - What do you call "vibe coding" that is more like a never ending slog of tiny UI fixes and long processes on .5TB databases?
Built an AI driven linux box for the office running Gemma4 in 90 days. Creates calendar appointments, litigation drafts, takes phone calls, responds to texts...and more. It needs about 90 more days until it is "done". Doesn't hallucinate cases. Bluebook cites with perfection.
GOALPOST MOVED.
"LLM must solve major conjecture without lean or data augmentation using lean. Otherwise its neuro symbolic AI, just as I predicted years ago. Gotcha."
@tszzl I came and followed you after I saw his negative tweet about you. But, you're right. But, also, I cant help myself from engaging because its just so funny.
