@kenklippenstein Your thesis is premised on the idea that the US can maintain air superiority, which has already been disproven in Iran. The only way for America to avoid trench warfare is avoid going to war.
@benchanceyy@adamjohnsonCHI Almost all the advances in the past year have been from expanded data center capacity allowing for the training of larger models. The demand for hardware is the ultimate limiting factor in how much it can improve as well as the lynchpin that forecloses the apocalyptic scenarios
@drumm_colin I agree that “the planet here” is negated, but just “the planet” is too loose. It implies ceasing-to-be when in this passage he is referring to alteration.
@believemeitryy@drumm_colin@en_salade@Kali_de_Armas It’s not that the planet itself turns into its opposite, but that we must try to hold part of its changeable nature as something fixed, which is the driving contradiction.
@en_salade@drumm_colin@Kali_de_Armas The acorn contains the Notion of the oak, and the oak contains the acorn as one of its essential moments. The determinate being of the planet is its coming to be and ceasing to be through all its moments, which while changing, still give us the One being discussed.
@drumm_colin@en_salade@Kali_de_Armas Why are you guys so hung up on “negation”? The dialectical process is a self-preserving negation, not an absolute one. It changes position while still remaining the same planet.
@DPRofParVollen@shallowmany Counter-Counterargument: Lenin was engaged in exactly the kind of thinking and theorizing that Marx is praising as life-affirming activity
@A_Philosopher See, I don’t think Hegel would disagree here. The Notion proceeds us, but through our mind becomes Idea. The language he uses is tedious, but the method is illuminating and is useful in-itself for understanding conceptual movement.
@A_Philosopher@SchopenhauerNow The problem is how can we acknowledge objective reality for what it is if we can only perceive it subjectively? Hegel says that we can know it because we are part of it, and thus are self-reflecting subjects that can posit the Notion of objectivity.
@A_Philosopher@SchopenhauerNow How do you account for an “objective reality” without overcoming Kant’s assertion that noumena is fundamentally unknowable since it must be mediated subjectively? Hegel’s system aims to resolve this contradiction in order to create an objective “science” of knowledge.
@PoratEitan@SebastienBubeck It’s actually exactly the opposite. There’s no reasoning, and all of its apparent abilities come from the literature in its training corpus. It does not start from first principles, but when directed at a problem by an expert can uncover connections that were not obvious before.
@olivertraldi Why frame it as subjective? If a health insurance company is maximizing profit by denying lifesaving claims, then they are objectively complicit in the deaths of those whom they were ostensibly supposed to cover.
@h07d3n@McGamind123@FloridaThales This is only true for commodities that can be materialized out of thin air into the seller’s hand. Otherwise the seller would know the required price to generate profit from what they paid in production costs for labor and materials. It doesn’t sound like you read the book.
@Hermit_Thrush I agree that an artificial neuron could fully replace the functions of a real one, where I disagree is that I don’t think you would be able to call it a machine. The “computer” required to achieve AGI will need to be grown rather than built.
