•The average age of death for white people with a learning disability is 62 years.
•The average age of death for ethnic minorities with a learning disability is 34 years - just over half the life expectancy of white counterparts.
We must address inequalities for all people with learning disabilities but this excess mortality for ethnic minorities is shocking. This is contributed to by lack of culturally competent communication from health & care staff, inadequate support and reasonable adjustments, isolation resulting from community stigma/taboo and racist experiences amongst carers and staff.
Yet the general practice annual learning disability health check specification does not specify or provide guidance on the need for ethnically sensitive and tailored approaches.
Pleased to see this webinar organised by @raceequality on 23 July specifically about learning disability heath checks for people from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic backgrounds.

When 2:2 degrees are dismissed in clinical psychology jobs & education criteria’s it inadvertently perpetuates class-based barriers. Let's advocate for more inclusive & contextual admissions processes that value diversity of skills, perspectives, and lived experiences. #ClassClin
Still buzzing! A Minister for Mental Health & Early Years shows such understanding of the importance of the #first1000days in supporting emotional wellbeing throughout life. Lookin forward to working with you @JBryantWales in my role as Wales Development Lead at @ParentInfantFdn
“The fact that we now frame everything in terms of mental health means that all of these problems are subsumed under this single heading without any granularity,” he said. “It places the problem within the child and that serves to obscure some of these wider, contextual factors. The narrative around mental health is blinding us a bit to what is driving it.”
Well said Prof Craig Morgan. We can’t solve a systemic problem with counsellors, we have to look at the causes upstream.

With the whole school approach & ALN Reform relationships are central to emotional regulation.
The focus on consequences is driven by a need to punish.
What are you punishing? ALN? Trauma? Anxiety? MH Conditions?
Consequences should be a safe dialogue to unpick needs.
Thank you @childcomwales for inviting us to share how @WelshAmbulance supports Children's Rights. MATILDA'S STORY https://t.co/cW2skyvZYx highlights how engaging & familiarising children in a non-emergency setting with #uniforms#equipment can encourage a positive experience
Absolutely disgusting, this is not how to treat people coming to work & live in a new country. #healthandsocialcare system on its knees. These are not robots, #humanbeings coming to live & work, contribute to & enrich. Why would anyone be supporting this? #LittleBritain#Society
