•The average age of death for white people with a learning disability is 62 years.
•The average age of death for ethnic minorities with a learning disability is 34 years - just over half the life expectancy of white counterparts.

We must address inequalities for all people with learning disabilities but this excess mortality for ethnic minorities is shocking. This is contributed to by lack of culturally competent communication from health & care staff, inadequate support and reasonable adjustments, isolation resulting from community stigma/taboo and racist experiences amongst carers and staff.

Yet the general practice annual learning disability health check specification does not specify or provide guidance on the need for ethnically sensitive and tailored approaches.

The narrative around mental health is blinding us a bit to what is driving it.”

Well said Prof Craig Morgan. We can’t solve a systemic problem with counsellors, we have to look at the causes upstream.
