The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has this morning flagged off an emergency food relief distribution exercise in North Karamoja Diocese in response to the prolonged hunger crisis in the region.

The relief, mobilised by Church of Uganda with support from @ACTAlliance , Dioceses and other partners, includes 45,775kg of posho, 45,775kg of beans, 800kg of soya beans and 400kg of silver fish, targeting over 2,000 beneficiaries, including malnourished children.

Archbishop Kaziimba @Archbp_COU called for fair and transparent distribution of the food to the intended beneficiaries and thanked all partners for standing with the people of Karamoja during this difficult period.

Archbishop Kaziimba Flags Off Food Relief Distribution in Karamoja

KOTIDO, 18th August 2026 — The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has this morning flagged off an emergency food relief distribution exercise in North Karamoja Diocese as the Church intensifies its response to the prolonged hunger crisis affecting communities in the Karamoja Sub-region.

The intervention follows a request by the Bishop of North Karamoja Diocese, the Rt Rev Simon Akol Aisu, to the Church of Uganda Board of Trustees during its meeting at Nabugabo Holiday Centre in Masaka in July. North Karamoja Diocese covers Kotido, Kaabong, Abim and Karenga districts.

Following the appeal, Church of Uganda mobilised support from ACT Alliance, Dioceses, institutions, Christians and other partners to provide emergency food assistance to vulnerable households.

The consignment flagged off includes 45,775 kgs of posho, 45,775 kgs of beans, 800kg of soya beans and 400kg of silver fish, with the soya beans and silver fish specifically intended to support malnourished children. The intervention is targeting more than 2,000 beneficiaries affected by food insecurity.

Speaking during the flag-off, @Archbp_COU said the prolonged hunger crisis has caused severe hardship among families in Karamoja, with children particularly exposed to the risk of malnutrition.

“As a @ChurchofUganda_ , we cannot remain indifferent. We are here today because we believe that Christian compassion must be translated into direct, decisive action,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.

He commended ACT Alliance and the participating Church of Uganda Dioceses of Mukono, Kampala, Kigezi, West Buganda, Namirembe, Muhabura, Central Busoga and Soroti, as well as other institutions, partners and Christians who contributed towards the response.

Speaking on behalf of @ACTAlliance , Country Coordinator Irene Anena reaffirmed the Alliance's commitment to working with the Church and other partners to respond to the humanitarian needs of vulnerable communities.

She underscored the importance of coordinated humanitarian action in addressing immediate food needs while strengthening the resilience of affected communities.

Representatives from other ACT Forum members, including the Rural Action Community Based Organisation (RACOBAO), also attended the flag-off.

The function was attended by several political and government leaders, including the area Member of Parliament, the Resident District Commissioner and the Kotido District LC5 Chairperson, among other leaders.

Archbishop Kaziimba tasked those involved in the distribution to ensure that the food reaches the intended beneficiaries fairly and transparently, with no discrimination along religious and tribal lines.

He further called for long-term interventions beyond emergency food relief, including support to local farmers, climate-smart agriculture, reliable irrigation systems and improved preparedness for future climate-related emergencies.

The Archbishop appreciated the Government of Uganda and development partners for their ongoing interventions in Karamoja and appealed for continued support towards helping affected communities rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience.

According to Rev Agaba Andrew the Director of Household and Community Transformation @HCT_Direcorate, the intervention will continue to Karamoja Diocese tomorrow.

CHURCH OF UGANDA LAUNCHES EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR KARAMOJA FAMILIES AFFECTED BY ACUTE FOOD INSECURITY

Church of Uganda has launched an emergency appeal for support to thousands of families in the Karamoja Sub-region affected by the ongoing food insecurity crisis.

The appeal follows a resolution of the Church of Uganda Board of Trustees (Bishops) during its meeting held on 14th July 2026 at Nabugabo Holiday Centre in Masaka, West Buganda Diocese, which resolved to mobilize resources to support the humanitarian response.

The appeal is being coordinated through the Directorate of Household and Community Transformation (HCT) and is expected to end by 3rd August 2026.

The Board also directed that every Diocese designates a Mobilization Sunday to rally Christians and well-wishers to support the same.

Recent assessments conducted by the Church of Uganda technical teams, in collaboration with other humanitarian networks, indicate that 8 out of the 9 districts in Karamoja are affected by the hunger crisis.

The affected districts are Kotido, Amudat, Kabong, Nakapiripirit, Karenga, Abim, Napak, and Moroto. An estimated 41,000 people are in urgent need of emergency food assistance.

Church of Uganda calls upon Christians, dioceses, partners, and all people of goodwill to stand in solidarity with the people of Karamoja by providing both spiritual and material support.

The response will focus on:
👍Food supplies, especially posho and beans;
👍Nutritional supplements for children under five years;
👍Support for school feeding programmes to keep vulnerable children in school; and
👍Pastoral and spiritual care for affected families through the Dioceses of Karamoja and North Karamoja.

Speaking on the appeal, the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu emphasizes that this is a moment for the body of Christ to demonstrate compassion and love to brothers and sisters facing severe hardship.

“We are called to bear one another’s burdens and to respond with generosity and hope. The people of Karamoja should not walk through this crisis alone.” Archbishop Kaziimba.

Previous intervention

In June/July 2022, Church of Uganda launched an appeal for Karamoja and reached 4200 households with emergency food assistance and supplementary feeding for children aged 5 years following a similar hunger crisis in the region.

According to Article 6(1) of the Provincial Constitution, 1972 (as amended in 1994 and 2016), and Canon 1.5.1 of the Provincial Canons, 1997 (Reviewed in 2018), the Provincial Assembly is the highest body expressing the united life of the Church of Uganda and has supreme authority to speak and act on behalf of the Church.

It brings together representatives from all dioceses to deliberate on matters affecting the Province, formulate policies, make Canons (Church laws), and provide strategic direction for the Church.

His Grace @Archbp_COU is the Chairman assisted by the Dean of the Province.

The life of the Provincial Assembly is four years.
