Urgent humanitarian appeal to govt of Pakistan:

Afghan cancer and other critical patients are losing their lives because Pakistan visa restrictions are disrupting lifesaving treatment. I personally know two patients who died after they could not return to Islamabad to complete remaining session of chemotherapy/radiotherapy at Shifa International Hospital.

Patients traveling legally for medical care should not suffer because of regional tensions or the actions of militant groups. Humanitarian medical visas for Afghan patients must be facilitated urgently.

Every delay can cost a life.

I was reading this article/report from Drop site, and it was more of an opinion article than an exclusive report based on leaked documents. It is a commentary based on some 2 decades old documents related to Saudi-Pakistan defence cooperation. The problem is that the main 2025 SMDA isn't part of the leaked documents; the whole history of discussions and the build-up to it adds no value when the original framework isn't available.

It also falsely claims that all the Saudi-Pakistan military cooperation has been Iran-centric since the 80's. It is important to understand the foundations and history to help develop a more nuanced understanding.
Pakistan-Saudi cooperation predates even the Iranian revolution, as Pakistan’s first military deployment to the Kingdom dates back to 1969. Infact the first major posturing and direct engagement was during the First Gulf War, when thousands of Pakistani troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia. These precedents reflect a broader strategic partnership that cannot be reduced to a single regional rivalry.

Stripping current agreements of their historical context leads to oversimplified conclusions about complex geopolitical arrangements. One recurring issue with many contemporary experts on Pakistan is their tendency to interpret its policies through external lenses, typically Saudi, Iranian, or American, while overlooking Pakistan’s own strategic calculus. This approach ignores Pakistan’s long-standing and multifaceted role in West Asia, which extends beyond any single bilateral relationship. As a result, analyses often miss the interplay between security considerations, regional diplomacy, and domestic priorities that shape Pakistan’s decisions.

Another common misconception is the assumption that such partnerships operate as zero-sum exchanges, where one side’s gain is inherently the other’s concession. In reality, mutual defence arrangements are multidimensional. They cover not only military cooperation but also political alignment, economic interdependence, and strategic signalling. The value of these agreements lies as much in deterrence and perception as in raw military capability. Reducing them to security-driven frameworks overlooks the broader architecture of statecraft in which they function.

Pakistan’s policy position remains clear and consistent - veto should either be abolished or, at a minimum its use by the current permanent members severely restricted.
