Unleash Maths Mastery with Tables Stick! Turning times tables into interactive, strategy-based learning that builds confidence and sticks for life! #TimesTables
Loved working with the fabulous @DeltaSouthmere (part of @DeltaTrust_Org) last week on Times Tables Stick CPD.
Key takeaways:
• Build from secure landmark facts to derive new facts.
• Focus on reasoning to strengthen connections.
• Make relationships visible with manipulatives (e.g. ten frames, Numicon)
• Take time to dig into tricky facts and link back to what children already know.

🧮 I hear this from teachers all the time…
When children memorise times tables as lists of facts, many struggle to:
🔢 recall them out of sequence
🔢 apply them (fractions, division…)
🔢 retain them beyond the MTC
Times tables stick when facts are connected and make sense💡
Anchor known facts first (1×, 5×, 10×)
Build new facts from these
Less re-teaching 😃
More confidence 💪
More success 🌟

Such a privilege to be part of the fabulous #TDaPELondon on Saturday.
Huge thanks to @mathswithin10 for a brilliant session on number sense and to @joncripwellmath for a fantastic exploration of what cognitive science means for primary maths.
Thank you to everyone who came along to my Mastering Times Tables session - it was lovely to meet you all!
Lovely to catch up with familiar faces and meet new ones across the day.
High-vibes all round - thanks Kieran 🌟
Same slide I'd picked to share....too fast @mradamkohlbeck! This from @sparkeyparkes - it's very important for teachers to think about whether a game enhances learning or whether it's just gamification of quiz-style questions
🧮 Loved working with staff last week on developing their understanding of a strategy-based, mastery approach to teaching times tables. So many lightbulb moments 💡✨
Top teacher takeaways:
🔹 Teach small groups of connected facts, instead of long lists
🔹 Use manipulatives to make the connections visible
🔹 Use known landmark facts to unlock unknown ones
🔹 Celebrate small frequent steps of success

Do times tables matter beyond the Year 4 MTC?
It’s a question Jon Cripwell asked me during our recent podcast chat - and it’s a great one.
Here’s why I believe times tables matter beyond the check:
🌱 They unlock later maths: division, fractions, ratio, scaling, algebra.
🧠 They reduce cognitive overload, freeing working memory for reasoning and problem-solving.
💡 They build number sense: connections, commutativity, and deriving new facts.
💪 They boost confidence, curiosity and resilience across maths and beyond.
The MTC is a checkpoint - fluency in multiplication sets children up for long-term success.
