Updated my Twitter bio to add a link to my Ko-fi. I absolutely don't expect a cent, but if you want to flick me a dollar or two I won't complain. 😉 The money I receive from my Ko-fi will go toward getting the original fiction version of The Sound Of Light self-published.
One day y'all won't have any new fic to read because no writer is gonna want to put themselves through the constant gauntlet of AI witchhunts and you won't have anyone to blame but yourselves.
"can fic writers stop using says" "can fic writers stop with the exposition" "can fic writers stop with realistic arguments" "can fic writers do this" "can fic writers stop that" open your laptop and start writing your own fucking fic. whiney ass fuckers
My original writing is better bc even when I'm not working on an original project, I'm keeping my blade sharp and practicing with fanfic. My fanfic is better bc I have also had experience writing original material. Both are strengthened by my nonfiction work. They all connect.
I am not using my talent "better" than my friends who've only written fanfic bc I also write original fiction (and nonfiction). I am using my talent how I want to use it. The only benefit I gain is that my breadth of experience in MULTIPLE forms makes my writing better.
"I know bc I started writing with Eragon in mind but made it something else"
Ok then you haven't actually written fanfic. You do in fact lack experience in what you're talking about.
You are deriding an entire separate artform as lesser because YOU do not deem it worthy of being written. You are not helping people write more or write original material or write better, you are only discouraging them from writing at all. Take your snobbery elsewhere.
Please shut up.
Take it as someone who has been writing both original fiction and fanfiction for a long time. They are not the same. They scratch two completely different itches and involve two very different uses of the same skillset.
“Strength of feeling” is quite the choice of words to describe how pissed off many people are at the Society of Authors’s AI charter and their normalisation of its use in publishing.
There is no such thing as ethical AI. Not now and not for the foreseeable future.
On fanfiction.
There's nothing wrong with thinking up and dreaming alternatives to famous books and stories . But that's where it should stop. As soon as you decide to write it down -- stop. Don't.
Instead, turn that energy into dreaming of your own book, your own story. Want to change Harry Potter? Write a better fantasy. Capture the feeling you want, but create something else entirely. Why live in someone else's world and cage yourself to using their scraps, their plot holes?
Be free, writers. Be free, readers. You can leap from world to world. Imagine new places and people. Become infatuated with your own imagination, instead of that of others. There are limitless books out there. Find them, read them, write them. Dream bigger, dream deeper.
Maybe it won't be as fun at first, but eventually you'll realize that your mind has superseded the tiny worlds of the Malfoids or Star Wars what-ifs or whatever else is popular. You'll be making your own worlds. You'll be the master. Your magic system. Your characters. You'll be free to defeat the potholes, to create romances, adventures, horrors, deaths. You'll dine on steak and wonder how you ever ate happy meals.
I know this because I started writing with the Eragon series in mind, but I refused to make a fanfic. Instead, I imagined my own world, carefully molding it. It was a terrible book, but it opened my eyes to new ideas, new places, new dreams.
Use your fanfiction ideas as inspiration, but never as the foundation. Build your own foundation, my friends. Sprout wings and fly. The world of stories is endless. Why chain yourselves?
This does fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of fanfic. Fanfic isn’t training wheels for original writing, it’s playing make believe with dolls with a community of folks also obsessed with the same dolls.
"What The Water Gave Me" now has a Scrivener project rather than just a Word document. Using my AO3 template as usual because it'll be going up on AO3 at some point. Can't wait to see what my regular readers think of it 😅
yet another reminder that writers don’t write like ai, ai writes like US. thousands upon thousands of my words have been stolen.
if you use genai to write fics I have zero respect for you, just as you have zero respect for real writers and the craft you pretend to take part in
I don't expect any of you to be into something like this. I'm into some very weird shit, and not all of it is to everyone's taste. I am very aware of that. But if you're curious, drop me a DM.
In the time I've been running this account, I've really only posted about my fanfic. Because that's my main focus, and it's the only thing I can reliably write. I freely admit to that.
So far I'm around 8,600 words in. It will definitely need some work, but for now I'm liking where it's going. At some point after it's done I plan to put it up on AO3 - when that will be, I really can't say for sure.
