The @USSC has released its new report, 🇦🇺🇯🇵🇺🇸: Implementing a trilateral denial strategy along the First Island Chain.
I contributed the 🇦🇺 perspective alongside @CorbenTom, Professor Satoru Mori & Jeffrey W. Hornung.
🇦🇺🇺🇸🇯🇵 are increasingly aligned strategically. The harder bit is how you make that work in practice when each country has its own requirements, constraints and priorities, & there is no NATO-like structure sitting over the top.
A few of my key points:
▪️ Australia should not simply mirror the US or Japan. Our comparative advantage is geography, strategic depth and sustainment.
▪️ A First Island Chain strategy cannot be treated as geographically self-contained. China’s military reach extends well beyond it.
▪️ Australia’s principal role should remain the defence of Australia, while providing the strategic depth and rear-area support needed for a broader denial strategy.
Thanks to @CorbenTom , Shizuka Takada and the @USSC team for bringing it together.
