Like many Hongkongers, I was watching lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting's live cast in disbelief late at night on July 21, 2019 as innocent subway passengers were helplessly beaten by a mob while police did nothing. @nytimes did an excellent investigation: https://t.co/TkBusIYu8m
Today is the 7th anniversary of the start of the 2014 #UmbrellaMovement, #HongKongers' attempt to get genuine universal suffrage (real democracy) as promised in the Basic Law & on which the CCP to this very day still reneges. Three central areas of HK were occupied for 79 days 🧵
Most Americans don't realize that since late spring, ICE's focus has turned to targeting people lawfully present in the US, including a growing number of Hongkongers granted Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).
It is a sad irony that Hongkongers fled an illegal government crackdown in Hong Kong, were given safe haven in the US, and followed all the requirements imposed on them--only to be illegally imprisoned by the US government instead.

Today, a cross-party coalition of parliamentarians and human rights leaders has written an open letter to @andyburnham, calling on him to take a stand on #HongKong, as pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong faces the prospect of life imprisonment.

Chow Hang-tung has posted, "I'm curious about tomorrow's verdict. Justice resides in the hearts of the people; there's no need to look up to such top-down judgments. One verdict is nothing. Thank you all for walking alongside me....I've received all your support & blessings."
Thank you to @SenRickScott for co-sponsoring S.3655, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices (#HKETO) Certification Act. The bill helps ensure these offices do not continue to enjoy certain privileges if #HongKong no longer maintains a high degree of autonomy. Thank you!
We were honored to host @ShibaniMahtani in Chicago, where she once reported and thanked her for deep-dive work in #HongKong & beyond. The gutting of @WaPo is so much more than just one journalist. It reflects a myopic trend to dismiss real journalism when we need it most.
Shibani wrote a heap of damn good stories, people know that. What they didn’t see was her working the phones to get a colleague out of a Cambodian jail, helping a journo hunted by the junta escape Myanmar and answering every email from Singaporean kids asking how to be reporters.
(1/3) Regarding the Hong Kong fire: CNN quoted PolyU’s Prof. Huang saying bamboo is flammable, implying the bamboo scaffold was the main driver.
But multiple clips show the netting and wrap igniting, not the scaffold; most bamboo poles remained intact.
Strikingly similar to the, “freedom of speech is not absolute…” line used by pro-Beijing figures in Hong Kong, particularly Regina Ip, to justify pursuing and silencing political speech they do not like.
In ‘20 I wrote abt CE Carrie Lam: “her decisions and failures of governance having borne consequences that are global in reach. Though yet to fully come into focus, even a truncated list of the repercussions of her leadership is staggering…” Never would I have predicted this tho
Good to see @marcorubio calling out Hong Kong’s rise as a leading sanctions evasion hub for China, Russia, and others in his confirmation hearing. If you want to understand how Russia can keep military tech flowing in its Ukraine war…look to Hong Kong.
The US has just extended DED for Hong Kongers in the US for 24 months. It had been set to expire in February. A great relief for many.
