if you can guess the city/town of the mcdonalds i had with @spenciefy last week, i'll take you to this mcdonald's for free
Last week, I had the best quality McDonald's in my life so far (in the US). It reminded me of my short love letter to McDonald's I wrote this summer:
Some of my fondest travel memories around the world have been at McDonald’s. From pairing fries and taro pies with disgustingly cheap Captain Morgan’s in Hong Kong to my first ever “solo dining” meal while traveling in college in Barcelona, to the gastronomic masterpiece of a drunk McSpicy in Singapore to an illicit BYOB soju with Bulgogi Burger in Seoul, to the glorious respective stroopwafel and matcha McFlurries of Amsterdam and Hanoi to hotel room McDelivery in Bogota, to the uncanny valley of using sustainable reusable plastic versions of the fries containers in Provence.
It’s a remarkable feat of globalization and capitalism that wherever you are around the world, you can almost always find solace in a place where you can satiate yourself and rest your legs without getting scammed. McDonald’s is a beautiful illustration of a universal language and comfort that globalization has brought forth to the world. Amidst the uncertainty and changing order of the 21st century, the glowing Golden Arches provide a sense of comfort, a sense of familiarity, a sense of home.
I experience a childlike anticipation and excitement when arriving at a McDonald’s kiosk in a new country. After tapping the American flag to align my gastronomical opportunities with my mothcer tongue of English, the familiar interaction pattern transports me back home – only this time there’s a game of roulette to discover the local specialities of said country.
The first bite is usually somewhere between that final scene in Ratatouille where the critic Ego is taken back to his childhood memories of his mother’s cooking, or a literally eye opening moment like Mark Wiens’ YouTube videos (I too, travel for food).
You may not always be at McDonald’s, but McDonald’s is always there for you (except those flaky soft serve machines).
“In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.” - Buddha
Sharing this quote, which, with others, has helped center me so far in 2021.
@kanishkvashisht could be massive for US mkt (lagging significantly behind EU + China) given no OCPP(dominant in EU)-like protocol in the US that allows for the massive network interoperability + usage across diff charger networks + cms’s
