The recent #BBCEye documentary leaves out critical context and omits key facts that are essential to understanding the events it attempts to portray. What’s presented is a selective narrative that, intentionally or not, distorts the reality on the ground. Below are some glaring omissions and misrepresentations:
(1) The documentary never asks the obvious: why was a massive crowd advancing toward the Jatrabari Police Station at all? According to the BBC, protestors were celebrating rumors that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned. But that hardly justifies laying seize to a police station, especially when officers had already retreated inside and the Army had taken position outside to prevent escalation.
(2) Just one day before the Jatrabari incident, 17 officers were brutally killed in Enayetpur Police Station. Slaughtered with sharp weapons, their bodies were left hanging from trees. That incident isn’t even mentioned in the documentary. Why? it’s entirely reasonable that police inside Jatrabari feared a similar outcome.
(3) The BBC completely sidesteps the fact that, immediately after the collapse of the government, police stations across the country were attacked in a coordinated manner with a central command. Terrorists embedded in the mob killed dozens of officers, looted 6,000 weapons and over 600,000 rounds of ammunition. The officers at Jatrabari must have had real-time reports of this unfolding carnage. They had every reason to believe they were next.
(4) Throughout the protests, officers were picked off whenever isolated or unprotected. In Jatrabari itself, near the very station in question, two plainclothes officers were dragged out, lynched, and hung upside down from an overpass on July 19 and 20. They were off-duty, identified only because their ID cards and uniforms were found in their bags. The BBC vaguely refers to police “violence” in the area, but skips over these police killings completely.
BBC portrayed Jatrabari as a critical entry point to Dhaka and hub of students and labors. What the BBC fails to mention is what the area is most known for: a dense concentration of hundreds of madrasas, including the institutions that produced several of the so-called “masterminds” and leaders of this meticulous protest. These madrasa compounds sheltered thousands of extremists who organized and launched attacks from within.
(5) Footage clearly shows that police fired only after the Army withdrew and individuals began storming the station. Calls of “come inside” are visible, and people can be seen rushing toward the gate.
(6) By the time police shooting started, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reportedly on the way of leaving the country. The chain of command within the police had collapsed. One officer interviewed admits they received no help despite repeated calls to headquarters. The officers were forced to act independently, likely under panic, stress, and uncertainty, without orders, reinforcements, or backup. In light of the collapse of the government, the idea that officers received superior command to indiscriminately kill people is not only implausible, it’s unsupported by any real evidence. Officers acted on instinct and self-preservation, however imperfectly.
Why & How Bangladesh under Yunus is heading toward the path of radicalization/ Talibanization?
Because,
(1) In the last seven months, #Yunus has not only freed many top #jihadists from prison, but his administration has also purposefully mistreated and ousted the law enforcement personnel who had previously made important contributions to counterterrorism.
(2) Yunus included people who are sympathetic to the #jihadists in the leadership position of the Counter Terrorism & Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of the police and in his advisory council; therefore, the known jihadists are even meeting with the members of the country’s Counter Terrorism Unit and even the Law Adviser Asif Nazrul in their office, which is simply unprecedented.
Harun Izhar, a hardcore jihadist and decades-old HuJI-B operative, was seen in the Law Ministry posing for a picture with the Law Advisor Asif Nazrul after a meeting with him in the Ministry of Law office.
Harun Izhar was charged with more than 25 cases in connection with terrorism. He came into the light out of his terror cocoon when the existence of a transnational extremist group was busted by law enforcement agencies while they were getting military training in his mountainous madrasa premises in Lalkhan Chittagong. He and three other jihadists of Lasker-e-Taiba (LeT) were arrested from his secret training facility in 2009, and later information gleaned from them revealed that they were planning to attack the US embassy and Indian High Commission.
To add furthermore to his jihadi books, on 10 July 2013, he was arrested when a grenade went off in his madrasa, leaving three people dead, and a huge cache of IED-making materials was recovered from his room. Huji operatives were making IEDs when a few more IEDs got blasted accidentally.
Under the umbrella of Manhaz, a faction of Hefazat-E-Islam got radicalized at the very prescription of Harun Izhar. On 30 March 2024, a video went viral in which Harun was seen leading a group of radicalized students giving allegiance to Hefazat Supremo seeking permission to wage jihad against India & Myanmar.
He brought havoc while protesting the Indian PM Modi's visit to Bangladesh, which was celebrating 50 years of independence of Bangladesh.
While studying in Pakistan, he got in close nexus with LeT leaders and other jihadists groups in Pakistan. He serves as a nodal point between Huji & the Afghan war returnee with Hefazat Islam. At the very height of his jihadist zeal, a sizeable portion of Hefazat became extremely radical, which portends a catastrophic jihadi landscape here in this subcontinent.
Recently, under his very patronage and in the banner of Towhidi Janata Anti-Satime Rasul Andolon and Kara Mukti Andolon, he forced the authority to free all the extremists in prison. He was involved in the attempted assassination of secular poet Shamsur Rahman, and arrested people got training from his madrasa.
Vehemently anti-Indian, Harun Izhar dreams of establishing so-called Hazwa-e-Hind and masterminding Touhidi Janata, who are on a spree to establish Sharia.

A radical Islamic group has taken over the Shahbagh police station and brought a detainee live in front of the media tonight. They have sent a strong threat to feminists. It seems that there is no law enforcement agency in Bangladesh. Unofficially, the radical Islamic group is trying to run the country under Sharia law. The #Yunus regime has given these fundamentalists completely free reign and immunity.

What happened in Gazipur in Bangladesh?
Student leaders in Gazipur are claiming that a group of them heard that people were attacking the home of former Liberation War Affairs Minister and they went there to stop it; when the students arrived they were then attacked from behind.
According to Md. Abdullah, the Gazipur leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, "On Friday night, we received news that the house of a former minister in the Dhirashram area was being attacked and looted. After hearing this, our students set out to prevent it. 15-16 people quickly went to the spot. When they got there, they saw that looting was taking place. When they tried to stop it, many people suddenly gathered from behind. They had various weapons including Ramdas in their hands. Before the other students arrived, those 15 people were taken to the roof and severely beaten and stabbed. Later, when other students went to the spot, they were also beaten"
Local people have a different story. According to a report in Prothom Alo, "Locals and police said that around 9 pm on Friday, a group of angry students attacked Mozammel Haque's house in Dhikshankhan of Dhirashram in Gazipur city. They entered the house and vandalized it. At that time, the mosque's microphone announced that the minister's house had been robbed and called on people to come forward. Hearing the microphone, people in the vicinity surrounded the house. They beat up some of the vandals."
I don't want to say with any certainty that the student story is untrue, but surely, in the context of what has been going on in recent days in the country, one should be very sceptical of believing their narrative. In the last few days, it is the students who have been attacking - or supporting the attacking - of properties owned by Awami League politicians and supporters, but now we are supposed to believe that, all of a sudden, students are going to help to protect the house of an Awami League politician? This is hardly likely.
It is much more likely that the students attacked the house and found themselves the target of local people who were responding to the attack. I am not justifyng the violence on the students, but if the student were involved in looting a property, they are committing crimes for which they should be held to account - as should be those who attacked them
What is particularly scary, is that the senior police officers seem to be siding with the students narrative.

If true, this would be another extremely bad decision by the Interim government. I do hope Asif Mahmud is speaking out of turn. If he wants the Awami League to be defeated, do so at the ballot box.

On February 5, jihadists and Islamic extremists, alongside Yunus's student gang-backed mobs, set fire to, vandalized, and destroyed the historic Dhanmondi 32 no. residence of the nation’s independence leader, which was turned into a museum. Awami League leaders’ offices and homes around the country were the focus of numerous attacks and damage that followed.
One of the hundreds of locations attacked by the Yunus's student gang-backed mobs in the last two days was the residence of former minister and veteran parliamentarian AKM Mozammel Haque. However, the locals resisted, and few were injured following the clash.
Caught on camera: Yunus’s henchman, the mob leader Hasnat Abdullah, orders the killing of the Awami League leaders and the citizens for resisting and opposing #mobviolence. On behalf of @ChiefAdviserGoB, his top henchmen, Hasnat Abdullah and Sirjis Alam, are also assuring their violent followers of impunity while passing orders to unleash violence and kill anyone associated with @albd1971.
This video shows how Yunus gave these student gangs free rein to destroy the #AwamiLeague, including the common people who opposed mob rule across the country.
Provocations as well as impunity for crimes against humanity mark @Yunus_Centre’s rule.
