The Taiwan Center for Security Studies is happy to announce the launch of our podcast “Dire Straits,” now available on Spotify and YouTube.
In the first episode of Dire Straits, we break down the history of Taiwan’s extra-territorial islands of Kinmen and Matsu
Friday, February 28, 2025, will mark the 78th year since the Taiwanese people participated in island-wide protests against the ruling party of the R.O.C. (Kuomintang or KMT). The legacy of 228 remains one of the most contentious aspects of Taiwan’s modern historical memory.
A cornerstone within Taiwanese collective memory and a hallmark of Taiwan’s democratization movement is the memorialization of the 228 Massacre (often referred to as the 228 Incident).

📣US tries a new approach to politics with China based on contact with its population directly. Read Mary Gallagher analysis on the difficulties faced by the country and the reasons for those.
With limited access to uncensored information in China and people-to-people exchanges with the US at very low levels, humanizing the US-China bilateral relationship may be harder than ever before, Mary Gallagher (@MaryGao) writes.
