"The Artist" by Lucy Steeds.
In 1920, shortly after the war, a renowned elderly painter & his niece live in seclusion in the south of France. A sense of confinement under the bright sunlight. A British journalist visits them. A mystery in which a thirst for art & love intertwine.
With the spread of AI, the unauthorized use of voices and portraits has become rampant. Like a portrait, a voice is a symbol of an individual and is subject to legal protection under the Constitution. The Tokyo District Court has issued the first ruling on "voice rights."
Speaking at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on the 25th, the Pope warned that the ongoing development of AI must not become a tool for new forms of domination or injustice. "Even if systems can correlate data, they cannot answer questions about the meaning of life."
There is an ongoing debate over how AI should be utilized in education. New York City announced a one-year ban on students using AI in elementary and middle schools. "Children must learn to think for themselves and collaborate with their peers," said Mayor Mamdani.
While reading 'The Third Man,' I learned that "stand" can mean to treat a person to a meal or a drink.
"I really want a drink. --- I'd be awfully grateful if you'd stand me one."
Example from a dictionary;
"I stood him a meal at the village inn."
That was a new discovery.
We want to learn from the mistakes of the past and pass on the lessons of peace to future generations. However, now that a generation that has never experienced war has become the backbone of society, the "passing down of memories" is reaching a major turning point.
"There are no useless cogs in this world, and only the cogs themselves can decide how they will be used." (Yukawa from Galileo series)
Keigo Higashino, with his deep affection for humanity, delved into the human psyche and continued to portray people's weaknesses and strengths.
The British drama, A. Horowitz' "Moonflower Murders", whose original I read several years ago, is currently airing on TV(Channel 12). You can enjoy the intricate mystery, presented through a double-layered 'story-within-a-story' structure, alongside the beautiful British scenery.
Seeking economic growth through the military industry means becoming a country that desires war. That is truly terrifying. How can we avoid that? Japan now stands at a crossroad in history. We cannot remain mere bystanders.
The law criminalizing the desecration of the national flag, which leads to the suppression of freedom of expression, and the amendment to the Imperial House Law, which disregards the principle of gender equality -- these will surely go down as a stain on history.
It is regrettable that racist remarks are being directed at World Cup players. As people's backgrounds become more diverse & boundaries blur, national teams are built on mutual recognition and respect for each other's differences. There is no room for discrimination there.
The World Cup. With Trump's political interference in the refereeing decisions and mounting international criticism, the players' feelings must have been mixed as they took the field. The overly blatant pursuit of 'America First' has proven to result in more losses than gains.
@miho_flathill Since this World Cup has expanded from the previous 32 teams to 48, there are 32 teams in the knockout stage. That’s definitely a lot, isn’t it? Japan is facing Brazil, so maybe their match will end at 32?
I do hope they win, though.
On the 25th, the Japanese PEN Club (chaired by Natsuo Kirino) expressed its opposition to a bill of 'National Flag Destruction Offense' prohibiting acts that damage the Japanese national flag.
I, too, am extremely skeptical as to why such a bill is necessary at this time.
The NPB Fighters will play eight weekday daytime games this season. Many students enjoy these games as part of school trips and field trips. This is a valuable opportunity to witness professional play, and it will likely serve as an introduction to the appeal of baseball.
June 23 is ’Okinawa Memorial Day.' From the accident off Henoko, there are concerns about the peace education in Okinawa. But the starting point for learning is to listen to survivors of the Battle of Okinawa & visit US military bases - to know & take an interest in the issues.
The Fighters, who had been struggling against SoftBank, held strong and secured their long-awaited first victory in their ninth game. Pitcher Ito expressed the team's sentiment, saying, "The whole team did what we needed to do and came away with the win -- it was a huge victory."
The reason Japan has not been drawn into wars waged by U.S. so far is because of Article 9 of the Constitution. For Japan, the real threat of war lies in being drawn into U.S. wars. Given the current domestic political situation, now is the time to assess why Article 9 matters.
Yushi Odashima, known for his complete translations of Shakespeare's plays, has passed away. His modern vocabulary avoided the use of archaic kana, and his light, fluid style brought out the wordplay of the original texts. He breathed new life into Shakespearean theater in Japan.
