TinyNES RGB Generator update!
Thanks to v5100v5100, the awesome creator of Lava RGB, I recently got access to the source code for the FPGA firmware.
This was my first experience with Verilog, but after a couple weeks of work I’ve fixed everything that wasn’t working before.
TinyNES RGB Generator design is final and ready for production.
True RGB output with just a 2C02 chip. No wires, no soldering.
Switch for 2C02/2C03 color palettes. Same output level as a 2C03/2C05.
Use with the existing RGB Video Kit.
Open source hardware. Price will be ~$65.
I’m looking for some help—
If you have a flash cart (eg. EverDrive) and any of the following…
- an NESRGB modded system
- a Hi-Def NES modded system
- an Analog Nt mini system
- a retroUSB AVS system
…and are willing to run a few quick tests, please shoot me a note. Thanks!
As part of our agreement, all the improvements I’ve made will also be available upstream in Lava RGB proper.
I know some of you have been waiting for this for a while, and I appreciate your patience so much. I wanted this to be quality, and I think it’ll be worth the wait!
The FPGA source code won’t be open source, at least not for the time being, and that’s a decision that isn’t in my control. The hardware part will be open source though. Since I have access to the source, I’ll at least be able to continue supporting the code going forward.
@jimnashn I’ve made some progress, but not quite there yet. If anyone with Verilog and intimate PPU timing experience is interested in helping, please hit me up.
@jimnashn I really want to get perfect compatibility with the Former Dawn demo and certain palette test ROMs that rely on very precise mid-scanline palette change timing. This isn’t critical for the vast majority of games, but I’m a perfectionist.
@jimnashn The boards are fully quoted and ready for production. I’ve been working on the firmware, which I now have full access to (it’s not open source at this time, but that’s not my decision to make, but could potentially change).
@collingall You can file a post entry correction and get a refund if your items are on the exclusion list. Contact your carrier or customs broker to do this. I know way more about this than I should. Feel free to contact me directly if you’d like.
