The number of people who have misrepresented what @WilliamWolfe said is astounding. He, like many Baptsits, will not unquestionably support everything Israel does because the bible doesnt command us to do so. We do support God's chosen people, the church, wherever they are found
@tundpodcast You cannot honestly believe that is what he did based on what he said. Are you acting in bad faith or in ignorance to common human language? Its very hard to tell...
@Fred_Butler No Calvinist I know just says "The bible says so". We have the lionshare of scriptures to support the idea and we use them. Secondly, Calvinism is far from waning in the Baptist world as far as I can tell. I know more Baptist Calvinists today than I ever have before
@LizzieMarbach In his effort to not address the dispensational vs covenant theology debate he is pretty vague, but if that debate is fresh in the hearer's mind, his statements are clear and obvious and his appeal to scripture is prominent even though he doesnt spell it out in detail
@LizzieMarbach He is appealing to the New Covenant way of reading scripture which says the church are the promised people of God and the whole earth is the promised land. With that understanding of the bible he goes on to question undying loyalty to Israel because now they arent a special group
@LizzieMarbach Right after this he does say he appeals to scripture on other ideas. That speech was not the time to refute dispensationalism, but because so many Baptists no longer believe it, shouting "Because the bible says so" wont work for people who believe in covenant or NC theology
@ManassehRJones "They, then, who throw off the bridle, are not unjustly said to deny Christ by whom they have been redeemed"
John Calvin commentary on 2 Peter 1:1
He concludes a loss of salvation for the false prophets, but he believes the "them" in that phrase applies to the false prophets
@JuddBaroff@BMcGrewvy I just had this same question from a catholic friend recently who isn't familiar with this debate so I didnt pick up on the joking manner. Cheers
@jwsherrod He isn't out of step with the most fundamental Baptist ideal, that we are people of the Book. The bible gives strong evidence for New Covenant theology so he is more in line with Baptists than someone who would suggest "this is what we have always believed so dont question it"
@ZackRunning@jwsherrod There is strong biblical evidence for both Calvinism and New Covenant theology in the bible and in academia. Your comment is the real poison, a rejection of people who can defend their arguments with the bible just because it disagrees with your way of thinking
@JuddBaroff@BMcGrewvy Another way of thinking about is that Christ fulfilled all the promises of God to Israel. The promised people is expanded to include the church and the promised land is now expanded to include the whole world. What many call New covenant theology as I suspect WW holds to
@KenElderReal1@MadeFromDirt@Soteriology101 I see you dont address the Matthew 18 process of forgiving a brother who sins against you. Your hostility is not worth engaging any longer. Age doesnt equal wisdom and trying to belittle me for being younger doesnt reflect the bible and weakens your ability to be taken seriously
@KenElderReal1@MadeFromDirt@Soteriology101 All of these statements taken together makes it clear we must forgive as God forgives us which we see in a verse you quoted and in Col 3. God forgives those who repent and so should we. A person who doesnt forgive in that situation is not forgiven, ie not a Christian
@KenElderReal1@MadeFromDirt@Soteriology101 To gain a full understanding of what Jesus says about forgiveness you have to read everything he said about it, not just one statement. Its called systematic theology and its important and you seem to not understand that
@KenElderReal1@MadeFromDirt@Soteriology101 You call out calvinists and it seems clear you assume they dont believe this verse. Of course we believe it alongside the other verses like Matthew 18 and Luke 17 where Jesus says a man must repent before being forgiven. Sys theology is real, no one verse can form a doctrine
