@RyanSo51360760 The Masks are the descendants of the people that took over the Scholar, or original, Empire half a century ago and have gone to a military school for 14 years and then graduated with a mask molded to their skin. They hold power above Scholars and are the highest rank of society.

In the book that I’m reading, An Ember in the Ashes, my favorite character is Laia. She lives with her older brother and grandparents, and when her older brother is taken by the Masks of the Empire, she is forced to join the Resistance, which are the rebels. #mhhsfreshies

@sscoffield1 I really like having a female protagonist because even though in many books there are girl leaders, they are usually sidekicks to the main male character. There is a male protagonist in this book too, but they are both equally important.

She manages to survive the Commandant’s wrath, which has killed many of the previous slaves, and when the only people she trusted betray her, she takes it into her own hands to save not only her brother, but also everyone that is trying to escape the tight hold of the Empire.

She goes through many hardships, like getting a K carved above her heart with a hot knife, she manages to not lose hope. She wants to be brave, just like her mother, who the Resistance called The Lioness.
