I was born in 1999. My mom was born in 1977. We are 22 years apart - she had me while still in college.

Her story is one of David & Goliath magnitude.

At the turn of the century, she got her real estate license and joined a local team of a national brokerage. The managing broker was in his 60s and held old-fashioned sentiments regarding women in business.

Nevertheless, fresh out of college with a one-year old in a baby carrier, she, a single-mom, leaped head first into residential real estate with the odds completely stacked against her. She spent her first 2 years doing any and all deals that came her way. The broker had a tendency of handing her small deals he didn’t want to deal with, but she was hungry and got them done.

Her first big break came when she met a large residential developer. Initially, he didn’t see the need to engage with an inexperienced 24 year old female agent, but she didn’t take no for an answer. For the next couple of months, she persisted in reaching out to the developer. Eventually, he said “If you are this persistent with me, I think you have a good shot at selling off the houses in the subdivisions I am developing.” Ecstatic, she got the listing docs together immediately and ran straight back for the developer’s signature. Now, she just needed her broker to sign-off.

Here’s where things get interesting. The broker, impressed by the listing, which included over 30 higher-end homes, tells her “This is no job for a young woman like yourself.”

Pissed off, my mom grabbed the listing docs, left the team, discovered she qualified for getting her own brokers license, and started her own brokerage. Within 3 months, she sold 30 of the developer’s homes and became his go to broker. From 2002 - 2007, she sold all of his new construction homes.

Unfortunately, the developer suddenly died of cancer shortly before the 2008 housing crash. Then the crash happened. With her largest client now deceased and the country falling into a recession, the real estate industry froze. For many brokers and agents, transaction volume was down and business was only getting harder. As for my mom, she experienced the opposite.

From 2008-2011, she did the more transactions and made more money than she ever had in her career.

How? Through short sales.

Understanding the consequences that come with a foreclosure for homeowners, she realized she could help those in pre-foreclosure (lis pendens), which is a not a fun situation, avoid an even worse situation. Many owners were quick to say yes. To make it even better, she went to local banks and let them know what she was doing. The banks handed her buckets of listings. Sometimes, she’d get 20-30 new listings in one day.

Throughout this whole time, when I wasn’t in school, I was right by her side at listing appointments, showings, and her never-ending stream of phone calls. I basically grew up listening to deals being made.

As of today, my mom is an established residential developer with two luxury neighborhoods under her belt and more in the works. She just turned 46.

I never thought I would also get into the business of real estate. But what can I say, this shit is just in my blood. My mom and I are very similar people. She has already made a name for herself in the residential world. I am here to make a name for myself in the commercial world.
