Military Intimidation and the Sanctity of Civil Authority: The FCT Incident
The recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, and military personnel allegedly deployed to protect a land linked to a retired Navy Admiral once again exposes a dangerous pattern — the misuse of the military in civil matters and land disputes.
Reports indicate that officials from the FCT Department of Development Control, acting under lawful instruction, went to halt construction on a property said to be illegally acquired. In the process, they were confronted by armed military men who claimed to be acting “under higher authority.” When the Minister himself arrived at the scene, there seems to have been some more altercation. A soldier was heard saying he had been given orders....by whom, one may ask? — an affront not only to the FCT Minister but to the President of the Federal Republic, under whose authority he serves.
Under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Armed Forces Act, the deployment of military personnel is strictly limited to matters of national defense, public safety, or situations expressly approved by the President or authorized by law. The Armed Forces are not empowered to enforce civil or land matters, nor to intervene in property disputes. Such acts constitute an abuse of power and a violation of civil-military boundaries.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is directly supervised by the President through the appointed Minister. Therefore, any assault, obstruction, or open defiance of the Minister’s authority is tantamount to defying the President himself. This is a serious breach of protocol and a threat to the chain of civilian command enshrined in Nigeria’s democratic order.
Unfortunately, this incident reflects a broader pattern where some retired or serving military officers attempt to use armed personnel to intimidate civilian authorities or protect questionable private interests. Such behavior undermines the rule of law, erodes public trust in the Armed Forces, and weakens Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The President, as Commander-in-Chief, must call the military hierarchy to order. The military must reaffirm its constitutional duty to remain subordinate to civil authority and ensure that no officer—serving or retired—uses the uniform to pursue private gain.
The Nigerian Armed Forces have a proud history of discipline and service to the nation. That discipline must extend to respecting the boundaries of lawful deployment and upholding the supremacy of civilian authority. The events in the FCT should serve as a wake-up call for renewed civil-military education and strict accountability within the ranks.

Mimister Wike: Power, Process, and the Rule of Law
Any law enforcement officer, in uniform or plain clothes, represents the President and the sovereignty of the Nigerian state. To abuse such an officer is to diminish the authority of the Republic itself.
Minister Nyesom Wike’s decision to personally enforce a directive at a disputed site was a fundamental misstep. In constitutional democracies, power operates through institutions not impulse.
Executive authority must be exercised or adjudicated through the courts, ministries, and lawful instruments of state, never through confrontation. No matter how justified a grievance, a minister cannot become an enforcer; that violates the very idea of ordered government.
In a democracy, ministers act through process, not presence. A formal communication to the Minister of Defence, whose office oversees the Armed Forces, would have sufficed. If the officers were on illegal duty, the established disciplinary systems would have addressed it.
When a minister trades words with a uniformed officer acting under orders — lawful or otherwise — it corrodes discipline and confuses hierarchy.
The officer’s duty is to obey the chain of command, not verbal instructions on a roadside; the minister’s duty is to act through lawful channels.
The Minister should apologise to the officer for using abusive language. It is not acceptable behaviour.
The conduct of the DSS protective details was equally unprofessional. Their responsibility was to extract their principal from a rancorous and potentially dangerous situation, not to escalate it.
Security officers must remember that their loyalty is to the state, not to personalities.
This episode is a cautionary tale: This episode demeans the dignity of the office of the Minister and undermines the image of disciplined governance.

I didn’t even want to talk about this Wike issue because it’s my birthday 😁 but this is same Wike bullying and intimidating people, telling them to shut up in the same manner he tried to silence that officer. Yet now he’s the one crying about intimidation.
The thing about people drunk on power is that they hate it when they finally meet someone they can’t control or silence.
"This incident that happened today in Abuja between Nyesom Wike and a military officer, there are some people who couldn’t look Wike eye to eye before, but this particular incident will give them courage now,"👀
~Man says
The military's primary responsibility is to safeguard the country's borders, but instead, it is devoting resources to protect a parcel of land for a high-ranking officer, allegedly acting on 'orders.'
This pathetic scenario is the pervasive self-interest among officials who cater to the interests of a privileged minority at the expense of national protection with @GovWike not being an exception.
As governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike @GovWike too once stood in the way of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission @officialEFCC officers, gun blazing, stopping them from arresting a corrupt judge friend of his. What a country!
Soldier is trending because today Soldiers bullied Nyesom Wike from demolishing a property owned by a former Army Chief. And Nigerians are loving it, since the Military General Sarham incident, 2019.
“Shut up, you are mad. you are a fool. Do you know who I am.” A frustrated humbled Wike hurled at a 3-Star General on orders to keep him and his entourage out of a property.
Wike claims the owner of the property lacks proper documentation. Therefore construction mustn’t happen on the site.
Meanwhile, the Soldier said, the property has full documentation, and Wike should follow proper procedures. Because they’ve submitted all the paperwork to FCTA.
Wike somehow claimed the soldiers wanted to kill them. After making some powerful phone calls, the soldiers stood on Orders.
Himself, his police escorts, DSS and aides became violent. One overzealous police officer aggressively shoved a soldier, who somehow still remained composed.
Then, Wike started preaching against abuse of power, impunity and integrity.
One of his aides asked the General to “shut up when Oga is talking.” Forgetting Wike is but a mere civilian, not a GCFR or military officer.
A junior officer joined Wike in hurling insults at the 3-star general, who instantly rebuked him, reminding him he is far above him. So he shouldn’t be talking while he spoke.
Eventually, Wike swore they won’t work on the site. The General, again advised him to go through proper channels. And it only angered Wike the more.
This is the second time a soldier is standing firm against Wike. — remember General Sahram?
Wike claims Gen. Sahram ordered him be shot. Denying the allegation, The Gen. Jibril Sarham said, in 2019, Wike offered him billions to rig the general elections in Rivers, but he stood on integrity. But since then, became Wike’s enemy.
Nigerians are saying, Wike finally got a dose of his own medicine and he couldn’t take it. While praises are piling for the 3-star general for maintaining his composure throughout the drama.

Dear President @realDonaldTrump,
Referring to a sovereign nation as a “disgraced nation” on social media is both undiplomatic and unhelpful. The United States itself faces significant internal challenges, an average of about 45,738 gun deaths annually (based on data from 2019 to 2023), deep-seated racial inequality, and food insecurity affecting over 47 million Americans, many of whom are children, as recently highlighted by former President @BarackObama.
While I join in condemning the senseless killings of Christian and other religious worshippers in Nigeria, and appreciate America’s concern for human rights, it is equally important to respect our nation’s sovereignty and engage with dignity. Constructive dialogue, not public denigration, is what strengthens international cooperation.
To our so-called "leaders":
The time to act is now.
Enough is enough, of the ceaseless killings of innocent citizens.
Enough is enough, of our collapsing healthcare system.
Enough is enough, of the growing number of our people trapped in poverty.
If we truly have leaders, in the real sense of the word, then the well-being, safety, and dignity of every Nigerian should be the first and highest priority.
@chris_sound@jon_d_doe This clearly is an affront to nurses, who are among the most compassionate and caring professionals there are. There is no basis for comparison.
my second app, cleaneats, just got acquired 😭
two years ago, i was in nigeria — broke, stuck in my 3rd gap year, and completely cooked. most of my family gave up on me.
at 20, i made it to the US through sheer will, desperate to turn my life around. i slept on a friend’s college floor and bounced from relative to relative — until one called the cops and kicked me out. i hit rock bottom
but i never stopped
today i’m 22. since landing in america:
> solo built social wizard ($800k+ rev, still printing)
> went from tourist → student → “extraordinary alien”
> had my second app acquired
> made lifelong friends
i’m now in sf building the next one. my life goal is to build something 100 million people use — and i think i know what that is
we’re just getting started 🚀
The Recent Ibom Air Incident - My two kobo.
I have read, with deep concern, various accounts of the events surrounding the recent Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos involving Ms. Comfort Emmanson, and the subsequent actions taken against her.
