@SutterlinDan@zanehengsperger Reality is we don't have any more detail, for you or I, to do anything more than speculate. I just love the idea of small operators trying to build something big where the big boys play.
@SutterlinDan@zanehengsperger Your argument reminds me when I was in Zane's shoes trying to build out a small wine and liquor distributor business. Heck of a time with suppliers who were willing but large distributors locked them contractually and discouraged competition.
@SutterlinDan@zanehengsperger It can be propriety and your choice, and simultaneously messed up for the market. Reason why Chinese and foreign producers stay competitive with SMB shops. Too much friction with US ones. What @zanehengsperger has been arguing for some time
@MaxWithNanos@zachglabman 👉🏼"Condition FDI on reciprocity. Require fair trade, data, and labor reciprocity and apply industry-specific thresholds. If China restricts US ownership in their semiconductor or aerospace sectors, mirror it. If the EU blocks a US acquisition in energy or defense, block theirs."
@kimmonismus Can confirm this. Throughout Bavaria my phone 5G was faster than ICE Wi-Fi. Beautiful place but most people there are comfortable with around €36k/yr and laughable internet speeds. Very strange to us Americans. I don't get Germans
The success of your business can boil down to 1 question:
"Who do I have to become to get this person's attention as an equal?"
This framework took my agency from:
- 3 paid projects in 2021 (~$0 in profit!)
- 75+ projects in 2022
It started with a question and ended with a DM I never expected...
2021 me had decided to start a business.
I had basic skills in web design, knew Webflow, and was binging every business and motivational video you could find on the internet
There was a lot of noise, but one message that kept ringing clear to me was that I needed to niche down to be successful
So that's what I did.
I became the "websites for sweaty startups" guy.
I thought I was genius for jumping into a niche with little competition, and where the concept of "sweaty startups" was booming
But I still had a big problem. I had no clients. Almost no experience.
3 months had gone by and the only paid project I had landed was from a business group I was networking in.
The size of the prize? $150.
But I kept pushing forward.
My main method of getting clients I knew would be Twitter.
I had been slowly but surely building up my Twitter, engaging every day, and trying to make a name for myself.
And that's where the framework of "Who do I have to become to get this person's attention as an equal?" came into play.
I knew who I wanted the attention of (home service business owners)
I just had to figure out who I needed to be, and what I needed to do to get their attention.
So I sat down and crafted a plan to get there:
- practice every day designing and building websites for home service companies
- tweet my work
- optimize my profile to speak directly to these business owners
- engage directly with the most influential guys in the space every day
3 months went by, no luck, no progress, and I had only landed 2 other projects for a grand total of $500.
But everything changed when I received this DM:
I almost couldn't believe it.
At the time, Johnny had ~12,000 followers, a fantastic window cleaning business, and was kicking up a new home service company
I landed an opportunity with the perfect client for my business, one that would help take things to the next level.
To this day, that one connection is what led to nearly every big achievement, connection, and inflection point in my business.
And it never would have happened without answering that simple question:
"Who do I have to become to get this person's attention as an equal?"
When you want to go from point A to point B, the best thing you can do is find the people who can help you get there
You've probably heard of the "Dream 100", creating the list of 100 people you dream of working with
These are all strategies that boil down to:
1. becoming the type of person who the people you want to connect with want to work with
2. putting yourself on their radar
The main takeaway?
"Luck" usually finds those who look for it.
So put yourself in the right situations and be ready to capitalize when your time comes.
