@JennyKaste I share that type of problem with adults and it even takes us a bit to make sense and reason through. 2 divided by 1/4 is 8 ... but 8 one-fourth pieces in the 2 wholes. We've definitely been programmed to be "doers" of mathematics not so much "thinkers" of mathematics.
In fraction division a major piece is definitely specifying units! Students can come up with a numeric answer but what does it represent. 2 divided by 1/4 = 8 but 8 what? #5thMathChat
@JennyKaste I agree context helps give meaning to numbers. I find that when students struggle the first thing we do is try to relate it to a context they'll understand ... when I should've started there!
