I gave an interview on Taiwan to CGTN 👇 in which I recall an extremely telling historical anecdote that too few people know, and that I learned about from a book by Alain Peyrefitte ("Quand la Chine s'éveillera… le monde tremblera") - De Gaulle's envoy to China - and that he himself learned directly from Zhou Enlai.

When Kissinger made his secret visit to China in 1971 to negotiate the restoration of diplomatic relations, China had 8 pre-conditions for it.

Guess how many of these 8 pre-conditions were related to Taiwan? Answer: 8, all of them.

Which goes to show that, to China, Taiwan isn't merely an issue: it is THE issue.

Here were the 8 conditions, as recorded by Peyrefitte in book:

1. The PRC gvt is the only legal government of the Chinese people
2. Taiwan is a Chinese province. Its liberation is an internal Chinese issue. No foreign meddling can be allowed (however this liberation can be peaceful)
3. Asserting that Taiwan's status isn't settled is entirely wrong given that this province, at the end of the war with Japan in 1945, was given back to its motherland
4. We're firmly opposed to the 'two China policy', one mainland China, one Taiwan China, or any other similar manipulation
5. We're against the movement for the independence of Taiwan, fabricated and manipulated by foreign forces
6. The Americans need to withdraw from Taiwan and the Taiwan strait all their forces and military installations
7. The defense treaty between the US and Taiwan & the Pescadores Islands, signed in 1954 by Dulles and Chiang Kai-shek after the Geneva conference is illegal and void
8. China won't go to the UN as long as it keeps raising this question of the two Chinas or any other similar formula. We will be very firm.

This goes to illustrate that the foundation of the relationship between the PRC and the U.S. is all about Taiwan, since the very beginning. And of course, as we know, the US (Kissinger and Nixon) agreed to most conditions, as concretized in the 3 Joint Communiqués.

The offensive against Aleppo initiated by Turkish-allied Islamists from Hayat Tahir Al-Sham (a re-branded Al Qaeda that has made common cause with ISIS) and the US-allied Syrian National Army is the consequence of a strategic plan between the Israelis and Turks, backed by the US, to cut off the supply route from Iran to Lebanon for Hezbollah, and threaten to destabilize/topple the Assad government, forcing Russia to divert resources from Ukraine to salvage their position in Syria. Ukraine has provided advisors to the anti-Assad militants on drone warfare. Israel has apparently extended its explosive pager/radio scheme into Syria as well, disrupting Syrian tactical command and control at a critical moment in the fighting.

Syria had largely demobilized, and Hezbollah had mostly returned to Lebanon. Iranian-backed Iraqi militias are ill prepared to contain this assault.

It is highly likely Aleppo will fall to the pro-Turkish Islamist forces. There will most likely be a concerted effort, led by Russia and Iran, to salvage the situation in Syria.

This will take time.
This offensive may threaten the ceasefire in Lebanon.
The biggest loser in all of this is Turkey and its President, Recep Erdogan.

This offensive could not have been carried out without close cooperation and coordination with Israel and the US.

Erdogan’s critical words against Israel have been exposed as empty rhetoric.

Erdogan has once again betrayed Russia.
And his support for Palestine has beed exposed as fraudulent in every way.

Russia and Iran will stabilize Syria.
This will take months.

Syria and its allies will destroy the Islamist stronghold in Idlib.
This will take years.

The Iran-Hezbollah supply line will be restored/maintained.
Israel will be defeated.
And the US will withdraw from Syria, probably in mid-2025.
And Turkey will continue to betray everyone it does business with, because Erdogan stands only for Turkey.
