The typical Nigerian Mentality is about the typical predator / survivor mentality and I think it’s all down to how we were all raised and how we were told to view society.

Eat or be eaten.

We were raised to compete, not collaborate. Trust only your family, or your tribe. Everyone else is evil. Nobody is good. That is why we can’t even collectively agree on something as trivial as the best Nigerian soup, because ideally my soup is supposed to be better than yours.

Compete Compete Compete!

Same thing in school, we were raised to be the first in class, that coming second is absolutely unacceptable and “the person who carried 1st doesn’t have two heads.”

That is why we barely think of others but ourselves when it comes to politics too. My tribe is better than yours. This tribe is the worst. We are the best. Others are evil.

It’s all about the self.

As Nigerians, we are all lone wolves. Raised in a pack then left alone to fend for themselves and compete so that the best man (or in this case, wolf 🐺) wins. That’s why even while abroad, Nigerians just can’t seem to work together on a common goal without some form of competition or fight or the other.

You can’t expect lone wolves who have been on their own for too long, surviving life all by themselves to suddenly wanna stick together and fight like a pack.

So yeah, while this mindset or method of thinking / upbringing has a chance of making you individually brilliant, as a collective we will remain useless.

If we are ever gonna be better as a community and a nation, we need to learn how to collectively work together. But before all that, we need to be better people and the MINDSET MUST CHANGE. Your neighbor isn’t your enemy. Evil has no particular tribe or accent.

Maybe when there’s a mindset shift, until then, let the lone wolves roam free and conquer their territory.
