The CEO of the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (Quad C), Dr Willard Mwemba, in his remarks, stated that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was not just an act of putting ink on paper but a formalisation of the extensive work undertaken by the competition authorities of #EAC, #COMESA, #ECOWAS and #UEMOA. He recognised past informal collaborations among the four (4) regional competition authorities in supporting each others ongoing projects; the existing collaboration between ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority and UEMOA; speaking in one voice in an effort to maintain the jurisdiction of the RECs under the #AfCFTA; and the ongoing efforts to address double notification between the Quad C and the EAC Competition Authority.

Dr Simeon Koffi, Executive Director, ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority @Erca_official , stated that the MOU signing was more than a formal act but part of the wider process of Africa economic integration as outlined in the Abuja Treaty and #AfCFTA. Further, that no single authority, however capable, can handle the growing complexity of competition challenges alone. The Acting Registrar, Ms Stellah Onyancha, EAC Competition Authority @eac_Competition , stated that the signing of the MOU was going to enhance the collaboration & coordination on matters such as conducting joint investigations, sharing of experiences, market inquiries and capacity building. Dr Professor Filiga Michel Sawadogo, Commissioner in charge of the Department of Regional Market and Cooperation, UEMOA @cuemoa thanked the COMESA Competition & Consumer Commission (Quad C) for having organised the first meeting of the competition authorities of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in 2023 which brought the competition authorities of the RECs together to collaborate. He stated that this effort led to the formalisation of the MOU as at the end of this first meeting in 2023, the seeds of the strengthening of cooperation in competition between the RECs of Africa were planted and they germinated following subsequent annual meetings to formalise the collaboration.
