Nursing shortages and nurse-to-patient ratios are crucial health policy topics that key policy stakeholders need to address as a country to protect nurses and promote better patient outcomes. Unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios directly impact patient morbidity and mortality.

As of January 2022, 1/6 hospitals reported critical nursing shortages- the ANA declared this a national crisis. The cause is multifactorial, from the Covid-19 pandemic causing nursing burnout or having their license at risk with unsafe staffing ratios.

If we first improve ratios (and thus nurse's workload), we can create a difference in our healthcare system, keeping more nurses in the field.
