Two days before Israel is to stand in the dock at the International Court of Justice, accused of committing genocide, the UK's foreign secretary David Cameron suddenly remembers, under intense questioning, that Israel is the occupying power in Gaza, and that it therefore has a duty to ensure Palestinians receive the basic necessities of life it has been denying them for the past three months – and before that, for the 17 years of its blockade.

Should the court find that Israel is committing genocide, as it all too obviously is, the UK government would be complicit for supplying arms and for failing to press Israel to observe its obligations towards the Palestinian population under international law (something it has failed to do for decades).

Cameron's statement is an early sign of panic in western capitals, in case their efforts behind the scenes to intimidate and threaten the court's judges fail.
