-does this open the door for Cam Boozer at #2? if he's the top guy, the Jazz should take him

Q: Some fans think Danny Ainge and Ryan Smith should sell the farm to go get AJ. You’ve covered the NBA a long time. What’s your take?

A: They absolutely should not trade up.

And I know that’s probably a hot take emotionally for some fans, but it doesn’t make basketball sense.

The two best players in this draft are AJ Dybantsa and Darren Peterson. In my opinion, they are the same tier of player. They’re different stylistically, but they’re both All-NBA caliber talents with Hall of Fame upside if everything breaks right.

If you’re picking third or fourth, then sure, trading up makes sense. But if you’re already at No. 2 and there are two obvious elite prospects, why would you give up assets?

If you’re Utah, you simply let Washington make the pick and then you take the other guy.

Q: Most mock drafts have AJ going No. 1. If that happens, how does Darryn Peterson fit with this Jazz roster? You know this team well.

And I assume Darryn starts immediately while Ace Bailey probably comes off the bench?

A: Yeah, both Darryn and Keyonte George probably start together in the backcourt, while Ace Bailey likely comes off the bench initially.

Honestly, Darryn might fit Utah’s offense a little better than AJ.

Now AJ is incredible, but he’s much more ball-dominant. Darren can absolutely handle the ball and go get you a bucket or create an advantage, but the beauty of Darryn Peterson is that he can also play off the ball.

Will Hardy’s offense emphasizes movement, spacing, shooting, and driving lanes. I actually think Utah is one of the best possible fits in the lottery for Darryn Peterson specifically.

Now with AJ, he instantly becomes one of the most popular Jazz players ever because of the Utah Prep-to-BYU-to-Jazz storyline.

And what AJ gives you is another jumbo creator. He gives you size, athleticism, shot creation, and physicality. That kind of lineup would be extremely difficult to deal with in the regular season.
